The beginning was the acceptance of a completely twisted understanding of the Constitution. Once one has accepted the premise that the meaning of ...."Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" .......is actually that the state should actively prohibit the public expression of religious beliefs in its schools and in government, the playing field has already been set.
This effectively establishes the principle of freedom from religion and this mistaken understanding is now almost universal. Thus, it becomes a short hop, step and a jump to arrive at the conclusion that I have a right not to even hear about your religion, even if I come to your religious school.
The whole concept of "freedom of religion" has been turned on its head to mean "freedom from religion" which is a complete myth. Furthermore, how anyone can construe having to listen to a prayer as meaning that religion is being forced upon them, is beyond me. Plug in your iPod if it bothers you that much. Ignore it. Chat to the person next to you. How many times do we have to listen to stuff we disagree with, from the guy in the next car with his stereo up too loud to the guy at the next table in the restaurant who won't shut up about the business deal he's just made.
There is no constitutional basis for the prohibition or banning of any religious expression. Anytime, anywhere. Public or private.
