Oh, dear, is this shit starting all over again?

Perhaps they've been emboldened by Obama's treatment of PM Brown? Or maybe they're giving Ted Kennedy a rousing IRA sendoff.

“Two soldiers dead in N Ireland army base shooting: police”

SNIPPET: “BELFAST (AFP) — Two military personnel were killed and four people injured in a gun attack Saturday at an army base in Northern Ireland, a police spokesman said.

“Two people were shot dead, both male and military personnel,” a spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said. He added that four others were seriously injured, two of whom were also military personnel.

The attack took place at the headquarters of the Royal Engineers in Northern Ireland at Masserene.

Some reports suggested that it may have been a drive-by shooting, while others suggested the gunmen entered the barracks. It is thought that between 30 and 40 shots were fired.

Democratic Unionist lawmaker Jeffrey Donaldson told BBC television that he understood gunmen armed with machine guns had got into the barracks and may have been disguised as pizza delivery men.”

“Two die in ‘barbaric’ Army attack”

SNIPEPT: “It is believed that there were two long busts of gunfire during the incident

Two military personnel have been shot dead during a gun attack at an Army base in County Antrim, police said.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said two further military personnel and two civilians, all believed to be male, were were in a serious condition.

The incident took place at the Massereene Army base in Antrim, 16 miles north of Belfast, at 2140 GMT.”

SNIPPET: “Eyewitness reports have suggested that the attackers approached the barracks in a pizza delivery van, and the victims walked into the ambush believing a fast food delivery was arriving.

One witness who lives near the base told the BBC how he looked to the sky after hearing what he thought were fireworks.

He added: “Then I heard a lot of loud bangs again, only it was a lot more than there was initially - maybe between 10 and 20.

“Then the siren at the Army barracks went off. Then all you heard was the police sirens and ambulances and there was at least six ambulances.”

“Dissident threat level is raised”

By Vincent Kearney
Home Affairs Correspondent

SNIPPET: “The government and security services believe dissident republicans pose a greater threat than ever.

The threat assessment has been raised to “severe”, meaning an attack is regarded as highly likely.

The decision to upgrade the level was made by MI5 - responsible for gathering intelligence on dissident republicans.”

Two British military personnel were killed and four people were seriously wounded in a shooting at an army base in Northern Ireland, police said on Saturday.

“The two fatalities as I understand it are military personnel,” a police spokeswoman said, adding that two of the wounded were also from the army.

The shooting at the Massereene base near the town of Antrim followed reports that British special forces were back in the province gathering intelligence on dissident republicans.

A 1998 peace deal ended 30 years of sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland between the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which seeks a united Ireland, and pro-British Protestant guerrilla groups.

Special forces operated in Northern Ireland during the conflict, in which more than 3.000 people were killed.

British troops were stood down in the province in 2007, but sporadic violence has continued despite the peace deal.

In January, a bomb was defused in Castlewellan, a town 30 miles south of the province’s capital Belfast. A splinter republican group claimed responsibility for planting the bomb.

“Two soldiers die in Northern Ireland barracks shooting
Gunmen posing as pizza delivery men target British base in Antrim as sectarian violence flares again”

SNIPPET: “Last month security forces defused a 300lb bomb in Castlewellan, Co Down, which may have been intended for an attack on a nearby barracks.

And last year dissident republicans tried to kill PSNI officers in incidents in Derry City and Dungannon, Co Tyrone. Officers have been shot, attacked with rockets and landmines and had booby-traps set under their cars. Last year, 12 officers had to move house because of terrorist threats. In 2006 a shopping centre in Newry and a Homebase store in Belfast were bombed and badly damaged.

The most notorious of the dissident groups is the Real IRA, which was responsible for the deaths of 29 people in the Omagh bombing of 1998. They were also responsible for the attack on the Newry shopping centre.

However, operations by MI5 and the Special Branches in both Northern Ireland and Eire have thwarted plans to smuggle in weapons through Lithuania and the Balkans. Weapons and explosives are seized regularly and more than 90 dissidents are in jail on both sides of the border.”
