WASHINGTON -- Despite opposition from the White House, a proposal to tax motorists on the number of miles they drive each year is gathering speed on Capitol Hill.

Its popularity is increasing as Congress searches for alternatives to the federal gasoline tax, which is not indexed to inflation and has not been raised since 1993.

''Whether they want it or not, they are going to get it,'' Oberstar (D-Minn) said in a speech to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

ProtectOurFreedom, that’s a crazy & outlandish scenario.

That’s like saying in 2001, a left-wing Marxist will be elected President of the United States by 2008.

It’ll be interesting to see what minimum tax our Fuhrer imposes on the old, the retired—those who drive only a thousand or 2 thousand miles/year, back and forth to the store and the doctors office. Naturally they’ll be expected to donate their “fair share.”

this is a great deal for them.that way..if you’re a good boy and Vote (D) ..why just somehow, that GPS mileage tracking thingy might get turned off for 6-8 months or so.....while the (R) voters will be taxed not just upon how many miles they drive...but walk as well!!!

they need a new game to play with their “constituents”/serfs

Give the people enough of what they don’t want and you find yourself on the wrong end of a pitchfork. I’m sharpening mine.

didn’t you hear the fine for driving in reverse is 3x higher than the mileage tax for driving forward? /s

If you buy the aluminum GPS antenna cap I’ll be selling the GPS will “know” that you never moved an inch. and I’ll make a fortune re-flashing engine computers to change the mileage shown.

''Whether they want it or not, they are going to get it,'' Oberstar (D-Minn) said in a speech to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

This needs to be the headline of every opponent's campaign advertisements, along with, "here's what your so called 'elected representative' wants you to have, because he knows better than you. So just vote for him, shut up, and pay up!"

This might be one place where a tin foil hat might work...:^)

Just screen the GPS tracking device antenna and you recorded mileage will drop to zero. Remove it for a trip once a month just to keep their data base active.

I will go to prison before I pay their damned mileage tax. At least my room and board and taxes will be paid for! ***

Or just get lost south of the border for a couple of months and reemerge with a couple of new squeaky clean identities. That is if you don’t mind being called Jose.

There are going to be a lot of disconnected speedometer cables. That was done during WWII when gas stamps were issued.

You had to record the miles on your car and submit this with a request for more stamps. Many people would drill a small hole in the cover of the speedometer and roll the mileage back with a stylus, if they drove too many miles. Or they would disconnect the cable under the car.

speedometer/odometer cables won’t matter. Your mileage will be recorded by GPS..

This a tax on rural and suburban America. The urban centers filled with democrat voters will be largely unaffected, because they live in the same cesspool they work. For those who live 30 miles from the closest grocery store, commute 20 miles to work or whose living is dependent on travel to the customer the tax is gigantic. Make no mistake most of this proposed tax will be paid by those who reside in red counties and never vote democrat.
