Will on warming: The cold facts
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW ^ | March 7, 2009 | Bill Steigerwald

Posted on 03/07/2009 12:32:28 AM PST by neverdem

After George F. Will wrote a column last month questioning the faulty premises and apocalyptic predictions of global-warming alarmists, he caught holy heck from America's "eco-pessimists." He and his editors at The Washington Post were blasted with thousands of angry e-mails, most of which challenged Will's assertion that global sea ice levels have not been dramatically reduced by man-made global warming, as environmentalists claim, but are essentially the same as they were in 1979. Will, who had used data from the Arctic Climate Research Center as his source, also was accused of multiple inaccuracies by The New York Times' Andrew Revkin. Will wrote a second column defending his data and returning fire at Revkin.

All is calm now and Will is getting ready for the start of his favorite season -- baseball season. I talked to him by phone on Thursday from his office in Washington.

•Q: You have felt the righteous wrath of those who believe in man-made global warming. Are you still all there?

•A: Oh, heavens. Yeah. The odd thing about these people is, normally when I write something that people disagree with they write letters to the editor or they write a responding op-ed piece. These people simply set out to try and get my editors to not publish my columns. Now I don't blame them, because I think if my arguments were as shaky as theirs are, I wouldn't want to engage in argument either.

•Q: The big issue was about how much global sea ice there is now compared to 1979.

•A: And that of course was a tiny portion of the column. The critics completely ignored -- as again, understandably -- the evidence I gave of the global cooling hysteria of 30 years ago.

•Q: They like to pretend that there really wasn't...

All well and good, Mr. Will. So have you started to realize yet how foolish your columns from last fall about how reasonable and smart Zero was made you look.

Acid rain is a real issue and we are long overdue in putting on the scrubbers to fix it. We should have them up in the TVA in 10 years or so.

Ozone depletion is an uncertain issue. We have banned CFCs, but the ozone hole sometimes gets bigger nowadays. We’re starting to think that the ozone hole is determined largely by solar and cosmic radiation. Maybe CFCs have an effect too. Maybe.

Human-caused global warming is clearly a crock. There is NO correlation between fossil fuel combustion and global warming and never has been. No causative correlation exists between CO2 and atmospheric temps. There is NO correlation between AGW and ocean ice levels.

IPCC has created false data, developed idiotic computer models, and produced this world-wide fear campaign in order to create fear and stampede governments into taking action: taxing only the developed nations with capitalistic economies. There is no acutal data and no truth to AGW whatsoever.

AGW is a political movement, much like communism or socialism, and is being prosecuted by these very groups.

Brilliant post. Mankind has a built-in need for religion. Having banished God, the atheistic Left simply fills the resulting void by worshipping themselves, nature, The Party, the Great Leader of the People, etc.

Maybe so, but my point is the issue is now over 20 years old, we were all going to die from it (including the planet), and now it's been a non-issue for at least 12-15 years.
If acid rain is that bad in the TVA why have they waited 20 years; why will they wait another 10?

It IS a real issue but the news media and watermelons could never get any traction with it. Now people think it was a false issue. Ask the Canadians how funny they think it is.

A nation that loses its topsoil loses everything. Topsoil is one of the most precious natural resources we have. Acid rain leaches the minerals out of it. We call it soil titration.

TVA has not acted before now because there was no political pressure to do so. Also, the cost of TVA power is going to go up 10-20% to construct and operate the scrubbers. Nobody wanted to spend the money.

The point is that there are real environmental issues that need to be addressed: Acid rain is one of them. Here in Tennessee you are surrounded by coal-fired power plants and the effects of acid rain are everywhere. Worst of all our topsoil is being ruined. Coal is a great fuel for power and we can burn it without emitting all that acid rain. You should see what the Chinese are doing.

Unfortunately, the environmental movement got taken over by the reds long ago,and they lie about everything. Including global warming. They make a lot of skeptics.

Enviroweenie lying has awful consequences for mankind.
