CNN) -- Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his name from consideration as surgeon general of the United States, an administration official said Thursday.

"Sanjay Gupta was under serious consideration for the job of surgeon general," the official said in an e-mail. "He has removed himself from consideration to focus more on his medical career and his family. We know he will continue to serve and educate the public through his work with media and in the medical arena."

Sources said in January that Gupta met then-President-elect Obama in Chicago, Illinois, in November to discuss the post. Gupta has declined comment.

The transition team was impressed with the combination of Gupta's past government experience, as a White House fellow in 1997 and a special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Clinton, along with his medical career as a neurosurgeon and his communication skills, the transition source said.

Seems to me that a lot of folks are deciding that they don’t really want to be on a losing team.

Excellent video from 2007, showing Gupta challenging Moore on healthcare. Gupta says national healthcare is not free, but paid for with high taxes, Medicare is going broke, and the best care in the world is in the US and waits are long in countries with national health care. I think he backed out because he has some sense.

Not yet. Wish I did. Obama is very dangerous even if he loses his popularity and his teleprompter.

I doesn’t take a neurosurgeon to figure out the freekin disaster that is about to happen.

Yea, but if he loses his popularity, sane members of Congress will stand their ground...I’m beginning to be able to breathe a little again. Maybe this country will come to their senses again sooner than we think.

Don’t count on it. If people sit back and take it, the Obama juggernaut will continue. If people keep pressure on their congressmen, call radio shows, write blogs, and take to the streets, sooner or later the chrome is going to rub off of the Obama administration. When that happens, what will be left is another Blago administration.

True, I also read that he has a lucrative career at the time, and would have to give it up to join the Administration. He probably realizes that 4 years from now (after working for the administration), his reputation would be scarred badly.

Smart move by Gupta, he jumped ship before it sunk his reputation and career.

Gupta is a smart and highly accomplished doctor, at the very top of his field — the pinnacle of success — and he’s rewarded accordingly. Why go into government? Only mediocrities, most of whom couldn’t cut it in the private sector, go into government.

“Top Treasury Candidates Pull Out”
“Seems to me that a lot of folks are deciding that they don’t really want to be on a losing team.”

That’s exactly right. Anne Nazareth, the highly accomplished Wall Street lawyer who bailed out of the deputy Treasury nomination, is also highly accomplished (husband to former Fed vice-chairman and now TIAA Cref president Roger Ferguson). They both have stellar reputations — and stand to do a lot better — in the private sector. It’s mostly people like Geithner who go into government.

“No need to be nasty. I prefer one thread with lots of comments to repeated threads with few comments - but that’s just me.”

Sorry to be late. My last was not answered. Just what do you do? I grow weary. Do you actually have something of substance to contribute? Gupta is such a minor thing, do you have some insight into the events of the day? Let us have it.
