Iowans say pig-odor study passes the smell test

DES MOINES, Iowa – On Capitol Hill, a $1.7 million earmark for pig odor research in Iowa has become a big, fat joke among Republicans, a Grade A example of pork. But the people who live cheek by jowl with hog farms in the No. 1 pig-producing state aren't laughing.

They're gagging.

"You hold your breath and when it's really bad you get the taste in your mouth," said Carroll Harless, a 70-year-old retired corn-and-soybean farmer from Iowa Falls.

In Iowa, where the 20 million hogs easily outnumber the 3 million people, the rotten-egg-and-ammonia smell of hog waste often wafts into homes, landing like a punch to the chest.

Again, just like people who move next to an airport and then complain about the noise: Didn’t you KNOW that hog farms smell really bad when you purchased a house there?

I suspect that they will need another $20 million to study the effect of wind on odors. Does it smell worse downwind or upwind??? You know, things that common sense would tell you.

I hate the Left at this point in my life. I really do. These people will have us all starving and living naked in a wilderness just to save “Mother Earth”. Damn them.

When there were family farms it was tolerable. With the corporate farms that make up most of this the hog farms are huge. Picture lakes of pig feces sitting there waiting for a breeze to pick it up.

Everything was nice, peaceful and quiet here in this very rural part of west Ocala until the next-door neighbors moved in with their pigs. They don't make much noise, but when the wind blow the right (wrong?) way . . .hooooooweeee!! The stench of pig poop is enough to knock you down.
Do we complain even though we were here first? No, we just close our windows. After all, there's very few days in central Florida where you can even have your windows open. The only time we did complain was when the pigs got out and dug up our yard looking for food.

Still, though we would like to enjoy the evenings in our screened-in Lanai, but sometimes we can't due to the smell.

You can smell it everywhere in Iowa. I have family there. We went for a visit after we’d been gone from Iowa for several years and I was shocked.

We went shopping in Knoxville and the whole town smelled like hog poop. Even inside the Wal-Mart. Of course I was the only one who noticed. Everybody else was used to it.

“Use your own state money you pathetic Iowans.”

You are a dufus. You protest people from Iowa and call them pathetic and then go drive your car on federally funded roads.

Yeah and those roads pass through multiple states. I’m not smelling your pig smells from Iowa. Now get your grubby Iowan hands out of my pockets and read the Constitution.

They’re confused in Iowa. That’s not “pig smell.” That’s the stench of Liberalism, big government, pork programs, earmarks and high taxes from Tom Harkin.

Those roads don’t pass through multiple states, they stay right where they are built.

You read the Constitution, it was thrown away a long time ago and you didn’t complain. Assaulting a single state for this monstrosity of a bill shows your true intellect.

Really? How do you know I haven’t been complaining? I don’t recall you being attached at my hip. Your lust for my money is showing, Leech.
