Waukegan police said a clerk at a guns-and-ammunition store appears to have shot a man who was trying to rob the establishment this afternoon.
Officers responded at about 1:45 p.m. to Mike Schrank's Smoke 'N Gun, 2010 Washington St., to a call of a person shot, according to a police news release.
There they found a man who had been shot twice in the chest and once in the leg, and a shop clerk who had a gun trained on him, the statement said.
Witnesses told investigators that the injured man went behind the counter and argued with the clerk.
The confrontation turned physical and the clerk pulled a handgun and shot the other man, witnesses said. During the struggle, the clerk also shot himself in the hand accidentally.
The man was taken first to Vista West Medical Center in Waukegan, then to Advocated Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was taken into surgery. The clerk was taken another local hospital for treatment, police said.
Police believe the man was trying to rob the store, the statement said.
In October a 20-year-old man who held up a Waukegan grocery with a pellet gun was shot and killed by a clerk who fired at him after the robbery, as he pedaled from the scene on a bicycle. A Lake County grand jury later declined to indict the store clerk in the killing.
I’m just shocked there are such stores in IL.
This is the right that the left wants to take away from us.
Paging Charles Darwin...Charls Darwin to the White Phone Please...
The chicago machine is slipping . . . .
At the range and gun shop I frequent, all the employees do open carry. Short of a suicide wish, you would definetely not wanna mess around in there...
Nobody ever said criminals were smart!
He should have killed the guy. They will be sued out of existence now.
Rob a gun store? Hmmmmmm...Darwin award.
> He should have killed the guy. They will be sued out of existence now.
Yup, my SERE School instructor once told us that if you shoot someone make sure they’re dead, no matter how many times you have to reload.
It will be his word against yours, and he’s dead.
You also do not want to go to court against a cripple.
I used to live not far from there. Waukegan — especially that part of it — is gritty, miserable, crime- and gang-ridden.
It’s too bad the store clerk didn’t kill him. Now he has to face lawsuits, etc, and have his name, family and background dragged through the mud.
It shouldn’t take a grand jury to determine that no charges
apply to a self defence shoot.
The prosecutor can determine that with a review of the police report. Is this SOP in IL?
I wonder if having shot himself in the hand spoiled his aim (more than his aim was already spoiled when he hit himself, that is). In any case, I’ll bet he gets more range time from now on, and I’ll bet if he’s robbed again the criminal will need a toe tag. There’s nothing that teaches you to finish a job like the aftermath of a shooting that leaves the criminal alive.
Indeed?
It takes a special kind of stupid to try to rob a gun shop.
In the case that the Grand Jury saw the robber was shot after the robbery while fleeing on a bike so that may not be a clear case of self defense (to some people not me )
I know that where I am the DA will sometimes put a case in front of the GJ just to deflect any flack
Don’t you have to permanently remove your genes from the gene pool, and thereby contribute to the betterment of mankind, in order to be a nominee?
Wow!
Cannot believe it!
Who would have ever thought?

There’s a gun store in Chicago?
Now what exactly did this robber think was going to happen when he pulled out a gun in a gun store. Hell, those clerks have probably been praying for a legitimate target to try out their weapons on.
