Limbaugh's debate challenge goes too far
Dallas Morning News ^ | 3/5/09 | Mikey Landauer

It's been fun debating whether the GOP leadership vacuum is being filled by Rush Limbaugh, but I think Rudy Guiliani said it best this morning on CNN: Rush is a powerful voice within the party, but he is not a leader of the party. Leadership is completely different from what Rush does. Both have their place.

And Rush seems way out of his element challenging a sitting president to a talk show debate. Aren't Republicans the same ones who think Democrats don't show enough respect for the office? Don't they bemoan Obama's shirt-sleeves attire in the Oval Office? And yet they think he should be bullied into a talk show appearance to debate economics with an entertainer? Give me a break.

Rush's ego seems to be the only thing growing faster than Obama's budget deficit.

It wasn't Rush who declared himself to be the "leader of the Republican Party". It was Obama's stooges. So debate the leader, you chickensh*t.

Still waiting for those "leaders" to step up.

It “goes too far” to challenge a President to a debate? Where does the author think we are— North Korea? What a jerk.

Same as he did when Harry Reid attacked him, Limbaugh turned the attack into Gold. This is just so funny. And the author of the Dallas opinion needs to put his panties in the wash.

The logic is incomprehensible. In fact, it hurts my brain to try and understand it.

Obama is the one who lowered the office by attacking a private citizen. Obama suggested that he was the leader. As the designated leader, Limbaugh has every right to challenge the president.

Basically, they´re suggesting Rush should sit and take it and play nicely with Obama.

Rush called their bluff and they’re retreating to their already prepared fall-back position. Lame.

So I guess Rush should pay homage to the Messiah as a vassal and treat Obama like a feudal lord and not deign to impose himself on our new emperor and expect noblesse oblige.

And Rush seems way out of his element challenging a sitting president to a talk show debate.

Here we have a sitting president directly challenging a private citizen who happens to be a radio talk show host, as though Rush represents the Republican Party. It is fitting and proper for Mr. Rush Limbaugh to challenge the president to a radio debate. President Obama has the opportunity to debate Rush Limbaugh so he can support his contention that Rush is wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privilege_of_Peerage

Scandalum magnatum

At one time, the honour of peers was especially protected by the law; while defamation of a commoner was known as libel or slander, the defamation of a peer (or of a Great Officer of State) was called scandalum magnatum. The Statute of Westminster of 1275 provided that “from henceforth none be so hardy to tell or publish any false News or Tales, whereby discord, or occasion of discord or slander may grow between the King and his People, or the Great Men of the Realm.”[18] Scandalum magnatum was punishable under the aforesaid statute as well as under further laws passed during the reign of Richard II.[19] Scandalum magnatum was both a tort and a criminal offence. The prohibition on scandalum magnatum was first enforced by the King’s Council. During the reign of Henry VII, the Star Chamber, a court formerly reserved for trial of serious offences such as rioting, assumed jurisdiction over scandalum magnatum, as well as libel and slander, cases. The court, which sat without a jury and in secret, was often used as a political weapon and a device of royal tyranny, leading to its abolition in 1641; its functions in respect of defamation cases passed to the common law courts. Already, however, the number of cases had dwindled as the laws of libel, slander and contempt of court developed in its place. By the end of the eighteenth century, scandalum magnatum was obsolete. The prohibition on it was finally repealed by the Statute Law Revision Act 1887.[20]

If Obama chooses to use the Oval office to bully a talk show host, then it is fair game for the talk show host to have Obama “be bullied into a talk show appearance to debate...”

I think Rush should suggest that they debate on pay-per-view with the proceeds going to the winner’s charity. In fact, would be great to see (since it’s not my money) Rush offer a large cash payment to a charity just for Barry showing up to do this.
