Star-Telegram Publisher Gary Wortel announced today that because of "unprecedented revenue declines due to the economic recession," the paper would be reducing its work force by about 12 percent and enact a wage cut.
In a memo to employees, Wortel said the reductions would occur in virtually all areas of the paper's operations. In addition to involuntary layoffs, he said a voluntary buyout plan is being offered to many of the more than 1,000 workers.
The Star-Telegram reduced its work force by about 18 percent last year through voluntary buyouts, layoffs, attrition and outsourcing.
The paper also reduced expenses by entering a joint distribution agreement with The Dallas Morning News and selling some of its buildings. Last Sunday, the paper announced it was raising the single-copy price to $1 Monday through Saturday and $2 on Sunday, the first price increase for non-subscribers since 1995.
In addition to the work force reduction, Wortel said employees making more than $25,000 would receive wage reductions ranging from 2.5 percent to 10 percent, depending on their salary.
McClatchy Newspapers Inc., parent company of the Star-Telegram, announced several weeks ago that it was freezing 401k and pension plans at all of its more than 30 papers and would be looking to reduce expenses by more than $110 million company-wide.
"The impact of the economic recession on our ad revenues has deepened, forcing us to make these difficult decisions. We remain focused on our goal to be the number one local news source and provide a valued product to readers and advertisers," Wortel said.

The danger of losing the ethnic media
In the year 2014, The New York Time has gone offline.
The Fourth Estate’s fortunes have waned.
What happened to the news?
And what is EPIC?
You are about to watch a future history of the media:

Excellent!
The last time I visited Ft. Worth and read that rag, their Lefty Art Reporter had a huge article featuring some forgettable sculptures of the ‘70s depicting tired, faceless workers trudging home from their thankless jobs.
It’s nice to know that these scribblers won’t have to worry about that any more. All they need to do now is wait for BO, their god, to send them their checks for life’s necessities.
They should start by laying off the editorial staff. They've never met a convicted murderer, especially one of color, who deserves to be executed.
A dollar for the daily paper? That’s steep. Should be about 50 cents tops.

10 cents.
After numerous generations of statist liberal dominated government schools crowding out the Three Rs in favor of sensitivity training, political correct diversity indoctrination, etc., these newspaper people are SURPRISED that they no longer have enough literate folk in the population who would be interested in subscribing to a newspaper?
Duhhhh...
And the more literate conservatives and libertarians out here don’t WANT to read the Bravo Sierra being dispensed by the Cynthia Tuckers (Atlanta Journal) of the world.
Sounds like a textbook case of planned suicide to me.

I Have a Ton of Stuff to Donate!
Like my hopes, my dreams, and a lot of other stuff I invested in voting for this uneducated pr!ck who is in the White House now. My neighbor - who I now believe is a complete moron - told me last year, “You have to vote for Obama. He will bring change. He will end the power of lobbyists. He will end earmarks. The economy will stabilize within his first weeks in office. And your stock portfolio will increase in value just by having his steady leadership in charge.” I think I will go throw a rock through my neighbor’s window. I wasted my vote, and now we are stuck with this empty suit for the next four years. But believe this: I will not be snookered into voting for a Democrat ever again. As for the Seattle P-I, I hope it goes the way of the Obama administration: gone, and quickly.

What happened to their Saviour, to their Messiah saving them? The Pravda was state sponsored so why not the PI? They are great at dispersing propaganda to the masses and thus a very vital and important part of the Socialist Movement. They are the great voice of the “working man” who will lie to him now? Its horrible that they now are forced to go on bended knee to beg of the evil pig bourgeoisie.

The news business - papers, TV, and all - do not seem to understand they cannot get advertising dollars without readers. The biased information in these rags seem only to filter everything to come out as they believe. There sill be very few tears shed for these liberal entities leaving for good.

Donate to keep the PI in business? Fuggedaboutit! Was a good newspaper once upon a time. Recent years found their loony-left editors converting their “journalists” to propagandists supporting their Socialist/Nazi agenda. Let the PI compete in the marketplace of ideas with other on-line publications. The PI’s electronic version will suffer the same fate their paper edition is currently undergoing.
