It's fun to speculate about what kind of dog the Obamas will get and to picture Malia and Sasha romping with their new pet on the White House lawn. But the Obamas should take this decision seriously. Millions of Americans will copy the first family, so they ought to choose a breed that could live happily in most American homes.
The latest word is that they are leaning toward a Portugese water dog.
[A moment of stunned silence, please.]
A Portugese water dog? What can they be thinking? Is someone in the family a full-time fisherman who needs a diving assistant? And if so, where? The Anacostia River?
The Obamas are intelligent, so we can only hope they are still reviewing the options. Let's hope it's not too late to convince them against a Portugese water dog, which the American Kennel Club describes, in an understatement, as "very resistant to fatigue." This may be a characteristic of our new president, but he gets to work off his energy all day. Their dog -- bred to work all day, as well -- probably won't get to do that.
I can just see millions of Portugese water dogs snapped up to live in apartments and neighborhoods without dog runs and in city outskirts without sidewalks, much less water. I can see Portugese water dogs everywhere, being walked for 20 minutes in the morning, spending all day in crates or on sofas, then walked 20 minutes in the evening and let out to pee before bed.

"Why are you doing this to me Barack!?"
Waiting for PETA to step in.
what happened to the poodle?
The breed organization I belong to has the same concerns because we too have high-energy dogs that don’t belong in a limited environment like the White House, much less in millions of apartments and private homes.
Why can’t the Obamas just get an ordinary lab like everybody else?
Waiting for PETA to speak up on this is like waiting for NOW to come out against the slavery and massacre of women in the Muslim world.
Ain’t gonna happen.
Leftists stick together.
You mean Biden?
“It’s fun to speculate about what kind of dog the Obamas will get”
No it’s not.
How about a Presa Canario?
I hear that they like black folks real well.
One of the girls has allergies so there choices were limited, much like ours will soon be
I got two Jack Russells from a rescue program. People ran out and got them after seeing them in movies and on TV but never realized that they really aren’t great dogs for small children. They’re big dogs in small packages that need a good fence with lots of room.
Reminds me of my old Briard! There was no way I could give him the exercise he needed. Constant grooming too.
One thing is certain , They wont be getting a “Blue Tick”.
I could almost swear he’s the same guy I saw kicking a Shepperd on 34th Street one day in 93’.
I cant stand abusive owners!
No way the presidential cement pond will suffice for a PWD.
{:^D
I heard Michelle is hoping HARD for a Mastiff male!
You expect THE ONE to get an "ordinary" dog? Absurd!
Until this topic came up, I had no idea what kind of dog I might own. However, my dog adopted as a puppy that someone threw away on the street, looks just like a Portugese water dog.
Let me tell you, if you have the room for them to play, they are great dogs. Mine loves everyone, would never hurt anyone, and loves to play and romp all day.
The only down side is that he is totally worthless as a watch dog. If an axe murderer carrying his still bloody instrument of death came on to the property, my dog would try to get him to play.
I thought the ObaMaster needed a non-allergenic dog? The PWD looks like an allergen factory to me.
The perfect dog for someone who is allergic to fur is a Bichon Frise.
Have you ever owned a lab puppy? They could run rings around any Portugese water dog. I don't know why everyone recommends labs as family dogs. They do love kids, but unless you can give them constant attention and exercise, they will chew up everything in the house, and the house as well.
