WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior Senate Democrat said Tuesday he would consider taxing U.S. workers on their employer-sponsored health insurance to help pay for extending coverage to millions of uninsured Americans.
"I think that tax provision should be on the table," said Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, who will play a major role in writing the legislation to revamp the U.S. healthcare system as promised by President Barack Obama.
"It's too aggressive. It skews the system," he said of the tax benefit.

Remember, there were wage and price controls and a company couldn't just offer higher wages as an inducement ~ so health insurance was used.
Without this system we'd lost the war and you'd be in concentration camps where all the guards would be Democrat politicians.
Just like today!
Wage and price controls made a mess that we are still living with today.
Remember, the Democrats ran that war and they imposed their own peculiar ideas of what motivates people on friend and foe alike. Basically the Democrat theory was that American workers, given their heads, would crap on the country for a few bucks, just like the rich guys who hung around FDR.
Oh yeah, that’ll fix it. Ballooning health insurance costs, hours down, pay down, add more expense to the mix. Brilliant!
I interpreted “Without this system we’d lost the war ...” to include how untaxed health insurance came about - price and wage controls. Meaning the root of health insurance provided by employers was due to government interference in the markets. I don’t think I misread that. Now I definitely could have misinterpreted any intended sarcasm in what you said.
Not soon enough I’m afraid
In some states employers are mandated to pay for health insurance of its employees (Hawaii for example).
Another regressive tax out of the democrats.
Yes, and with the added benefit of keeping werewolves away!
.
The birth of Kaiser Permanente (for example)....
Employers will stop offering group plans - why should they when they can shift that cost to the government/taxpayer.
With full mobilization of the economy for the war effort, there was no danger that a top quality worker would end up in the wrong job provided that both he and the employer could participate in that decision (that he work for that employer on that projct).
Central control of all employment decisions would have prevented good workers from leaving poorly managed systems to go to better managed systems which, due to being better managed, would necessarily provide more umph to the war effort.
WITHOUT HEALTH CARE INSURANCE AS AN INDUCEMENT, Democrat party appratchiks would have been running everything at all levels and we'd lost the war.
These guys just never stop trying to shaft Americans. What a Frickin’ A$$hole.
Sorry, had to say it.
What are they not thinking of taxing?
Makes perfect sense... tax private insurance through employers... and then NO-ONE can afford private insurance (except the super-wealthy and politicians with their free government-paid coverage). That way there is an excuse to just completely socialize the entire US medical system.
Then dictators can decide what medical care we can receive and when. Old? Then you don’t need costly surgery or treatments... you’re gonna die soon anyway.
You yeah you. You’ve got a job, so you can wait while this illegal alien...errr.... guest worker gets care he couldn’t get back home.
I’m sorry Miss... you have a lump in your breast... we need to to a mammogram. Lets see... since we are dealing with a possibility of cancer... lets rush up the schedule... how about 6 months from next Thursday?
Folks - at what point do we say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”?
abortion
I have been thinking EXACTLY the same thing...
Yeah, our legislators here in Montana are depressing. Two DEM senators and a DEM governor. One representative and he is Republican Denny Rehberg. (thankfully we have one repiblican) Quite discouraging for me and I told myself when Obama got elected that Tester’s office and Baucus’s office would know me by name...or at least their staff would. It seems like I average 4 calls a week to those guys. Doesn’t seem like it does much good, though. sigh....
oops...I am tired...repiblican = republican
You are right, but pretty soon, there will be no one to tax, we'll all be POOR!
What the IDIOTS in Washington have not realized is you cannot tax, tax, tax, there will be nothing left & we WILL BE IN A HUGE DEPRESSION!
