President Tells Unions Organizing Act Will Pass
The Wall Street Journal ^ | MARCH 4, 2009 | KRIS MAHER

MIAMI -- President Barack Obama told AFL-CIO union leaders Tuesday in a videotaped address that the controversial Employee Free Choice Act will pass, signaling his full backing for legislation that makes union organizing easier.

"We will pass the Employee Free Choice Act," President Obama told more than 100 top labor officials in a closed-door meeting at the labor federation's winter gathering in Miami, according to people at the meeting.

The bill would make it easier for unions to recruit workers because it would let them join unions simply by signing cards rather than through secret-ballot elections in which companies can campaign against the union. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations have been campaigning against the legislation.

In his continuing assault on Capitalism Obama offers up the Employee "Free Choice" Act. Just in case there was any breath left in her.

My conclusion: Obama is purposely trying to DESTROY our economy.

The bill would make it easier for unions to...

1. Destroy American businesses

2. Increase costs to consumers

3. Intimidate workers into joining unions

4. All of the above

Sadly, you are correct. Obama is systematically destroying the American way.

My God! What are we going to do about this monster? What in the hell have we done. Between jug-ears, pelosi, and reid, what the hell are we going to do?

It’s like they’re trying to destroy our country within 2 years before we could possibly throw them the hell out!

former Democratic nominee for President George McGovern comes out swinging in the pages of the Wall Street Journal against Big Labor’s demand for mandating coercive card check in union organizing drives:

Voting is an immense privilege.

That is why I am concerned about a new development that could deny this freedom to many Americans. As a longtime friend of labor unions, I must raise my voice against pending legislation I see as a disturbing and undemocratic overreach not in the interest of either management or labor.

The legislation is called the Employee Free Choice Act, and I am sad to say it runs counter to ideals that were once at the core of the labor movement. Instead of providing a voice for the unheard, EFCA risks silencing those who would speak.

The key provision of EFCA is a change in the mechanism by which unions are formed and recognized. Instead of a private election with a secret ballot overseen by an impartial federal board, union organizers would simply need to gather signatures from more than 50% of the employees in a workplace or bargaining unit, a system known as “card-check.” There are many documented cases where workers have been pressured, harassed, tricked and intimidated into signing cards that have led to mandatory payment of dues.

Under EFCA, workers could lose the freedom to express their will in private, the right to make a decision without anyone peering over their shoulder, free from fear of reprisal.

There’s no question that unions have done much good for this country. Their tenacious efforts have benefited millions of workers and helped build a strong middle class. They gave workers a new voice and pushed for laws that protect individuals from unfair treatment. They have been a friend to the Democratic Party, and so I oppose this legislation respectfully and with care.

To my friends supporting EFCA I say this: We cannot be a party that strips working Americans of the right to a secret-ballot election. We are the party that has always defended the rights of the working class. To fail to ensure the right to vote free of intimidation and coercion from all sides would be a betrayal of what we have always championed.

Some of the most respected Democratic members of Congress — including Reps. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, George Miller and Pete Stark of California, and Barney Frank of Massachusetts — have advised that workers in developing countries such as Mexico insist on the secret ballot when voting as to whether or not their workplaces should have a union. We should have no less for employees in our country.

I worry that there has been too little discussion about EFCA’s true ramifications, and I think much of the congressional support is based on a desire to give our friends among union leaders what they want. But part of being a good steward of democracy means telling our friends “no” when they press for a course that in the long run may weaken labor and disrupt a tried and trusted method for conducting honest elections.

Who came up with THAT title for the bill. It doesn’t promote free choice at all. Apparently secret ballots don’t fit the unions’ notion of democracy.

They don’t want democracy. They want everyone unionized. They want the power that comes with that. It’s like fascism. All power must be centralized in the White House.

All Obama has left to play is the Bogeyman ploy to explain away the terrible results of his policies. Hitler did it with Jews. I wonder who Obama will target.

Of all the things he is doing to hurt us, this is the worst of them all. This person (I refuse to call him a man) does not love America...he does not even like this country. I think it is a mistake when I hear well-meaning people say that he means well or that he truly believes his plan will help us.

Americans are getting exactly what they voted for. What did they think would happen with the election of a left-wing radical as President and a left-wing House and Senate with near filibuster proof majorities? We are screwed. My spirit is broken. I feel bad for my kids who are only 2 and 4. Their futures are wrecked. They will never know the freedom to achieve. They will never know the satisfaction of hard work paying off. They will live their entire lives oppressed by a thieving, suffocating Gov’t.

I hate Barack Hussein Obama.
