You'd think the children of the world's richest man could get anything they wanted.
But Bill Gates' kids aren't allowed to have any Apple products, the Microsoft founder's wife tells Vogue magazine.
"There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household," Melinda Gates, a Microsoft millionaire in her own right, tells interviewer Michael Specter. "But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids."
It's pretty clear Bill Gates is familiar with Apple products after all, Microsoft Word was first written for the original Mac. Yet the silken tentacles of Steve Jobs do not sully the well-timbered, high-tech lodge of the Gates family on the shores of Lake Washington.
According to MocoNews.net, Gates may have also banned BlackBerrys from the high-minded halls of his philanthropic Gates Foundation, issuing Windows Mobile-powered smartphones instead.
Still, the former Melinda French, a Microsoft millionaire in her own right before she became Mrs. Gates, admits to a little Apple envy.
"Every now and then I look at my friends and say, 'Ooh, I wouldnt mind having that iPhone,'" she tells Vogue.

They’re banned in our household too.
I hate to break it to poor ol’ Bill but the both the iPod and the Zuma have the same CPU chip ... I would know, I was on the design team

LOL - That’s funny.
I have a feeling Vista is also banned as well in that household.
You just know that his kids have their iPhones and iPods in their lockers stashed at school. :D
I’m sure he has DMB, No Doubt, Fergie and Snoop Dogg cloistered away in his house for his listening pleasure anyway.
“the silken tentacles of Steve Jobs”?
So it’s Apple that has the tentacles? Please.
I’ve heard that the joke at Apple is that they’re “Microsoft Research & Development” because rather that originate an idea themselves, Microsoft’s concept is “We can do that too”.
And ours. We have Sony MP3 players. My daughter's dad bought her an iPod (which mercifully broke after 3 months). We replaced it with a Sony and liked it so much, we bought 3 more.
Gates bought a substantial share of Apple stock years ago, this is a dumb PR stunt released to the media.
For someone on the design team, I'm surprised that you don't know the difference between the CPU chip itself and the ARM11 core included in the chips.
Audio CD players are ancient history here.
"Can you hear me now? Dang, my phone just crashed!"
I must be missing something. How does this matter?
Zuma is MSFT’s answer to the iPod
Well actually the ARM is built into the ASIC that is the entire chip.
Do you what company designed/supplied the ASIC that is in the Nano ?
The iPhone works on the basis of sensing capacitive discharge, the effect of which is blocked when one wears gloves. Tavo Gloves makes Winter gloves designed to work with capacitive touchscreen devices.
He doesn't want his kids to use Apple products.
