The Note, 3/3/09: Rush War -- Limbaugh fights great for Dems -- but just what GOP needs, too?
ABC News ^ | March 3, 2009 | Rick Klein

Who has more sway in today’s Republican Party -- Rush Limbaugh, Newt Gingrich, or Michael Steele? (Who gets to make that judgment? Who -- other than Rush -- should be happy that the White House has cast its vote?)

The Great Rush Wars of 2009 are great theater, particularly if you’re a Democrat. The sideshow gives President Obama some breathing room that Wall Street keeps trying to take away from him -- and if Obama gets to run his agenda against El Rushbo, here’s guessing that’s a fight the White House will take.

Speaking of taking: Democrats are ramping up efforts to make Limbaugh the public face of the GOP, and to make his proclaimed desire that Obama fail the standard against which other Republicans are measured.

But might it be that this fight is good for the Republican Party, too?

Yes, these Republicans hitting and then apologizing to Rush only enhance his power and influence. No, open warfare between the party’s leading talk-radio voice and its national chairman is rarely good. Yes, this contributes to a sense of the GOP being deep into the process of devouring itself.

Remember, though, that the Democratic Party needed to devour itself for a while after 2004 before it could remember where it left its appetite.

“Arguably what he is doing is important and helpful to the Republican Party and the conservative movement, even if a majority of Americans disagree with much of what he says and often may even find him offensive,” Charlie Cook writes in his CongressDaily column.

Amen.

In its 1st 5 weeks, the 0bama “presidency” already looks pathetic.

This is not a fake controversy. Rush Limbaugh has been gracious in accepting Michael Steele's sort-of apology.

But Michael Steele agreed that the Republican Convention looked like NAZI GERMANY and that the views that Rush expresses, which most of us agree with, are "ugly" and "incendiary".

That is NOT a fake controversy.

"The sideshow gives President Obama some breathing room that Wall Street keeps trying to take away from him..."

I agree. This needs to go away fast. Bury it and be done with it. You never see libs bicker like this in front of the children.

Could the Obama administration and the MSM quit obsessing over Rush Limbaugh and spend some time doing something that might actually help the economy before my 401K hits “O”??? Jeez.

It won't go away because the White House created it and the media is building it up...all day yesterday on MSNBC. A full hour on Larry King and Chris Matthews.

And the Left has huge fights all the time the media just doesn't think it's important enough to talk about. Steny Hoyer and Nancy Pelosi hate enough...who cares?

At their peril. Rush is not going to back down and start spewing "With all due respect," in every direction. The smartest thing they can do is ignore him lest they incur more broken bones, and instead pick on the Republicans in Congress who will puddle the floor and surrender by throwing Rush under the bus the way they did on embryonic stem cells in the 2006 election.

It seems the like the press is treating this like a good thing; that the prez and his proxies are going after someone in the media.
Imagine the uproar from said press if Bush and his White Houes had gone after, say, Olbermann, or Chrissy Matthews in the same way.

And here is ABC saying it would be a good thing if the White House goes after Rush, and wins? What will they say if the big zero turns his henchmen on them?

Obviously, the MSM types aren’t the sharpest pencils in the box. If Zer0 gets the power that I’m convinced that he wants, the media won’t be happy with total government control. Unless they want to be even worse whores than I think they want.

There is nothing in their underlying philosophy that could possibly help the economy. Socialism is intellectually bankrupt and bereft of any useful ideas.

I haven't seen a single proposal from the Obama bunch that would do anything positive for the economy, but lots that will hurt. But, "hope" springs eternal, even a broken clock is right twice a day, so they might stumble into something positive.

I don't understand why they and the MSM have picked this fight with Limbaugh; it just diminishes The One to be arguing publicly with a radio talk show host.
