Since When is Promoting Conservatism 'Ugly?'
gopusa ^ | Today

Side note:

GOPUSA is NOT affiliated with the Republican National Committee. GOPUSA is a private company with no official ties to any group or organization. Those readers who have followed GOPUSA since 2000 know that we are focused on the same thing that Rush Limbaugh is... promoting conservative principles.

At GOPUSA, our slogan is "Bringing the conservative message to America." So, when you see Republicans spending like crazy or acting like Democrats, please send your e-mails to the RNC. I get so many e-mails saying, "Not another dime to GOPUSA until Republicans get a clue." Hello! We are the ones trying to give Republicans that clue. Or another popular e-mail comment... "Where were you during the last 8 years when Republicans were spending like crazy?" We were the ones calling them out on it!

Ok, back from the side note.

And back to Chairman Steele. I wonder if he realizes how much damage his comments have done, or if he is consciously promoting a strategy of removing conservatism from the Republican Party. There is already one political party of Democrats. America does not need two.

First off, his comments regarding Limbaugh being "incendiary" and "ugly" are out of line. Since when is articulating the conservative message ugly? However, I find his "entertainer" comment more disturbing. Yes, Rush does a lot of "entertaining" things on his show... but it's talk radio... people listen to talk radio to be informed. Limbaugh's job is to provide information and to get people to think. By labeling Limbaugh as simply an "entertainer," Steele diminishes everything Limbaugh has to say. Isn't that what the media and the Democrats are trying to do?

Steele has apologized. Let’s give him one chance to step in it and be forgiven. After that, he’s fair game.

FWIW, I stopped sending contributions to the GOP awhile ago. I send them to candidates, or a PAC I found that was started by Sen Jim DeMint.

Scary he is so out of touch with us...he really needs to think hard about where he stands...

“I’m sorry you were offended” doesn’t qualify as an apology.

Did you get the letter and the petition? He’s working hard - I’m with him all the way...

No?

Me too!

He voted against the first bailout, he voted against the second bailout, he voted against the porkulus bill, he is pushing an amendment protecting free speech. I'm with him.

He didn’t really apologize, he just said he was sorry some where offended, that isn’t apologizing for his own words.. plus, he still has yet to take Hugley to task for his racist remarks about the GOP.. if he doesn’t even have the testicular fortitude to stand up against the ‘GOP is like nazis’ comment, he shouldn’t be our leader (instead he said ‘yeah’ to that comment.)

True. "I'm sorry that I don't prescribe to conservatism" would be more appropriate, followed by a resignation letter.

That sort of "apology" is nothing but a cowardly continuation of defending bad behavior. There is absolutely not a single indication that Steele is accepting responsibility for the situation he now has placed himself. Steele continues to attempt to shift the blame to Rush by saying "I didn't mean to hurt his feelings". The only way I would believe Steele is sincere would be if he said, "In an attempt to suck up to a B level talk show host I said some disparaging things about the the greatest conservative radio host in the history of radio. I am ashamed of myself for the damage I have done to the GOP and for the disloyalty I demonstrated toward a man who has treated me kindly in a way that advanced my career. I am resigning from my position as RNC Chairman and will devote the next few years to getting out the conservative message so some day I might be welcomed back into the fold."

I don’t think he’s explained himself adequately, he needs to explain what he meant by the “ugly” and “incendiary” remarks.

I also thinks he has no clue if he thinks the GOP going hip-hop will get more blacks to vote that way.

That’s not a vision of conservatism, everything he’s done and said so far says that he’s willing to trample all over conservatism in the name of the “big tent”

I was, personally, inspired by Rush's speech at CPAC. I also believe that his record on the air can be incendiary to those who don't have a sense of humor. I also realize that humor can be hurtful, even when one has a sense of it.

Phyllis Schlafly is also incendiary, however, it doesn't mean I find fault with the tenants she holds dear. I find her life and positions with regard to life in general inspirational.

Phyllis and Rush are both great conservatives on the furthest right end of the spectrum. Somewhere in between is where most Americans live. It doesn't mean they are evil, it means they are moderates.

In order for this country to survive, we need extreme right and extreme left so we can determine a course down the middle. We need to hear both sides debated vigorously and ad nauseum.

As sick as the far left makes me, I admire the debate. I encourage it. I am, therefore, defiantly in support of more of it. Long live freedom of speech.

Steele came across as a useful tool/idiot.

What was he thinking when he decided to "empathize" with the guy he was talking to? It was reminiscent of Hillary trying to sound "Black" when addressing a group of Blacks.

It sounds to me like Steele has an identity problem and will change his "core values" to suit whoever he is talking to - not the leadership the RNC needs at this time.

I hope he remembers why so many conservatives supported him and gets back into a rational state of mind, else he is like all the Blacks that voted for Obama just because he was Black and useless as a rallying point for conservatism.

I agree. I send to particular candidates, some who are sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony list, and others, like Fred Thompson. I won’t even respond to the republican mail. I have thought of writing my views and sending them in, just for the record.

Michael Steele may be a RINO. I think Steele in light of events this past week, needs to resign immediately and allow somebody who is a dyed in the wool true red blooded gutsy unapologetic conservative to lead the party!

“It sounds to me like Steele has an identity problem and will change his “core values” to suit whoever he is talking to - not the leadership the RNC needs at this time.”

That’s as may be. We’ll certainly find out. I’m praying for him on a multitude of levels. First of all, he has a degree of discipline to have almost made it through seminary. There are those who might argue that he didn’t have the discipline to go all the way, but I argue that he had the presence of mind to know it wasn’t right for him, but his heart was leading him to serve the Lord.

There is much to love and much to bear with the Catholic faith. Some of the beliefs are “hard sayings” that are difficult to understand and really difficult to obey. Michael will not come to his position at the RNC from the WASP background this nation was founded upon.

It will be difficult to understand for those who are still as I was. Mr. Steele’s background will certainly bring a very different approach. The Catholic Church always seeks to limit evil while reaching out to convert the heart.

Protestants didn’t get their designation because they were up for “Miss Congeniality” within the Church. Mr. Steele is not a useful idiot or a tool. He approaches his position from the Catholic upbringing he vigorously pursued.
