White House budget chief Peter Orszag is preparing to push back against critics portraying the Obama budget as a massive increase in federal spending. Mr. Orszag says President Barack Obama's fiscal blueprint would put funding for basic government operations -- outside of the military -- on a downward path over the next decade.

According to estimates prepared by the White House's Office of Management and Budget, spending on basic government, which covers everything from Commerce Department trade investigations to cleanups by the Environmental Protection Agency, would decline to 3.1% of GDP in 2019 under the Obama budget, the lowest level since 1962, when such data began to be collected.

In fiscal 2010, OMB estimates such spending would account for 4.6% of GDP, a level pushed up by enactment of the stimulus package. But over the next decade, OMB estimates such spending would average 3.6% of GDP under the Obama budget, below the 3.8% average over the last four decades.

Where does Bam Bam find these losers. One of Orszag’s proudest achievements was that he was a consultant to Iceland’s Central Bank. It is quite obvious he want to do for the US what he did for Iceland and send us into bankruptcy!
