As long as everyone is more than earning their keep, this may not be the best method of motivation and team building. Besides, in some endeavors it may take multiple years of effort before the big payoff.

I've found the "scrum" techniques for project management to be fairly effect. Software development is an empirical process...it needs to managed as such. The defined process model works fine on the manufacturing floor where every little detail is well understood. It almost always fails when applied to a software project.
