'I want my money' [number of early filers for U.S. income tax refunds increasing]

Early tax filers scramble for refunds; most will pay down debt.

BY JENNIFER WATERS

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Cynthia Jeanguenat, a professional tax preparer in Virginia Beach, Va., said she was inundated with clients' tax forms in the second week of February. What jumped out, however, was the large number of the usual clients who had filed earlier than in years past.

"People are creatures of habit and tend to come in at the same time every year," said Jeanguenat, who is an enrolled agent at Horizons Unlimited. "But some of the folks who already are in I don't normally see until the middle or third week of March."

Call it the race for the refund. According to a recent study by BigResearch for the National Retail Federation, Americans who expect to see a chunk of cash back from the U.S. Treasury overwhelmingly -- 71% -- said they already did or had planned to file their 2008 tax returns by the end of February.

And they're increasingly filing their tax returns electronically, another method to speed up the refund process. Nearly 60% of the respondents expecting refunds said they will correspond with the Internal Revenues Service online this year. Of all taxpayers, more than 53% said they are filing electronically.

Depending on your income and how difficult your finances are, you might be able to file on-line for free. Go right to the IRS website and it will give you a bunch of choices.

LOL That is good advice, the free part that is. However, there aren't too many people that trust the IRS enough to file their taxes through them, free or not.

Many people will not file electronically because they don't want the government getting that close to their checking accounts.

I’ve always been surprised at how few folks take advantage of the govt interest free loan available by underwitholding.
I’m not happy about sending in a check for 5 grand on Apr 15, but I’m glad to have had the money.

It’s not actually an IRS filing program. It directs you to maybe a half dozen commercial sites like H&R Block and so on. Which is the way it ought to be.

Hah, if somebody thinks the IRS can get to their checking account only if he tells them the number, he’s as wrong as he can be. Miss a filing deadline or a support payment and one fine day you’ll wake up to a zero balance.

People want their money before Obama seizes their refunds “for the common good”.

We use Turbotax. We’ve already filed (paper) & gotten our returns which were direct deposited. This time Turbotax allowed you to file one return electronically for free but the state return still had a fee. I’ll file paper until there’s no charge for electronic filing!

I’ve always thought it was wiser just to file for the extension, and complete the paperwork in the summer before the extended due date of August 15.

Its always a pain, even if I paid the same it would be a burden off my heart to go to a national sales tax.

Did it thru TurboTax. The FN-FAL should be here Friday...

I have a horrible feeling that by next year, getting your taxes in by April 15th will be listed under, "Remember when?"

Funny. I have not even started to file yet. To me it is such a drag to do them and this year just seems worse than others for some reason.

I am thinking of changing my number of dependents to 20 so i get all the money. I’ll put it in a stable low interest money market. The govt may not be around by next Jan....lol. I don’t want to let them go bankrupt holding my money.

One may file electronically but request a mailed check. There is no obligation to have a refund deposited directly.
