AUSTIN, Texas — Democrat Tom Schieffer, a former international diplomat with close ties to former President George W. Bush, is moving toward a race for governor.

Schieffer is forming an exploratory committee that will allow him to raise money and campaign for the office. If he ultimately runs, his relationship to the former Republican president is sure to be a top issue among Democratic primary voters next year.

Oh looky! A turncoat Pubbie turned Democrat "Bushie". I wonder whether the Dems will make a huge circus about him as they did with every Republican... *cough*

I don’t think Tom Schieffer was ever a Republican. He’s a life-long Democrat as far as I know and can remember going back to at least the 1990s.

You seem to be right. I read the news and looked up his bio, which apparently wrongly listed him as R.

Yes, asked the Mod for correcting the headline. He was indeed D since the 1970s.

Since when?...... I think you’ll find he’s always been a D. The Ds are hurting to find a candidate for this race especially since KBH appears to be entering and thus they seem to be focusing on the Senate seat or other positions.

Last year, Ron Paul kook Bob Conley of South Carolina announced he was leaving the GOP because the party wouldn't sing Kumbaya with terrorists, and becoming a RAT who would caucus with Harry Reid. He then ran for the U.S. Senate as a RAT and won the RAT primary in a fluke. His big campaign issue was to surrender in Iraq immediately and "bring the troops home".

Interestingly enough, not only did some freepers continue to support the guy, but they argued he was the "true conservative" in the race (despite the fact his Republican opponent was a staunch supporter of the WOT).

GWB in my opinion was a Democrat, he sure made Obama’s chance at being elected a sure thing. The Republicans have reaped what they sowed.

If Rep. Mark Kirk can run as a Republican, Tom Schieffer should be able to run as a Democrat.

Is this a brother of CBS’s Bob Schieffer, who is originally from Fort Worth?

GWB was not a Democrat; he just pined for Democrats to say something nice about him, and few ever did.

The demographics of Texas is changing such that statewide a democrat may win in the not to distant future. You have to remember that it wasn’t that many years ago when Texas was solidly in the democrat fold. Many of the current Texas Republican statewide office holders and congressional critters were at one point a democrat. The big difference is the old democrats were much more conservative than the current crop.

The Texas State House is within two of being controlled by the democrats. The State Senate is still strongly in the Rupublican ledger. The state elections for those to be in office for the 2011 redistricting action will be a factor of how the apportionment goes down after the 2010 census.

If Perry hadn’t pursued that superhighway, threatening to take away everyone’s land in Central Texas, he’d be a lock for reelection.
