A new study shows that states that consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption.
"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.
However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.
"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.
Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.
That company provided Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.
After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.
The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.
Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.
Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

I’d imagine demand is satisfied through a wider variety of other venues in states that are not conservative.
This is just a thinly veiled attempt at using the “hypocrite” smear, against those who have the least reason for concern about being called such.
the center of the porn industry is in the San Fernando Valley, California. Johnny Holmes murder took place 1/2 mile away from my stepfathers home. The bulk of this industry is in a VERY LIBERAL area called Los Angeles County.

This “study” draws too much conclusion from too little data. The facts presented do not exclude the possibility that liberals living in red states (that is, the minority) download porn because their neighbors aren’t into swinging, while liberals living in blue states don’t need porn because of all the parties they go to every day. Maybe this is unlikely, admittedly, but not excluded by this very poor study.
I just love how all the new sign-ups have such conservative-sounding handles.

I could honestly say that i have never thought there could be a difference in liberal versus conservative porn consumption.....hmmmm...i don’t make it a habit of discussing hardcore stuff that i have previewed occasionally...kind of an uncomfortable subject to be honest....i don’t judge either way...cause i’d be a hippocrit.

But they are only talking about internet porn.
I don’t know but I’d assume conservative and religious states have less opportunity for porn other than the internet. I’d also assume that those states have a significant number of people who aren’t religious and conservative, and if those people want porn their opportunities are limited to the internet so internet porn usage would be more pervasive than in states with other opportunities.
or maybe they are really human, succumb to temptation and if they feel like doing something wrong, they would rather check out porn than commit adultery with real women.
