Tucson Eco vandalism moves from labs to homefront

The Tucson area has a history of vandalism targeting what some see as environmental degradation, starting in the early 1970s when a group of University of Arizona students known as the "Eco- Raiders" vandalized construction sites to protest the city's sprawl. Three members, all graduates of Canyon del Oro High School, were fined and sent to jail in 1973.

• 1977: A hot-wired bulldozer knocks down two homes built on a 4,100-foot ridge in the Tucson Mountains. A year later the half-completed homes are destroyed in a suspicious fire.

• 1979: Saboteurs saw through the supporting poles of four billboards just south of Tucson on Interstate 19, toppling them.

• 1981: Vandals are blamed for felling a power line to a radio tower in the Tucson Mountains that had been criticized for defacing the range.

• 1987: Russek's, a Tucson boutique specializing in fur coats, closes after repeated vandalism.

• 1989: Vandals break into four University of Arizona research buildings, setting two fires and releasing more than 1,100 laboratory animals.

• 2001: Saboteurs attack the power line project for the Mount Graham Observatory, causing about $200,000 in damage.

• 2001: Arson fires destroy four luxury homes under construction in Pima Canyon. No one claims responsibility.

• 2001: The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) anonymously claims credit for the arson of a McDonald's restaurant on North Campbell Avenue. "ALF" and "ELF," which stands for Earth Liberation Front, were spray-painted at the scene of the fire, which destroyed the restaurant. It has since been rebuilt.

• 2006: Tucson animal activist Rodney Coronado, who had previously served a prison sentence for the arson of a Michigan State University mink researcher's office, is sentenced to eight months in federal prison for actions taken to disrupt a mountain-lion hunt in Sabino Canyon.

Frankly, when I read stories such as these about arsonists posing as enviro-whatevers, it gets me angered enough to suggest that when these individuals are caught, they should be taken to the nearest vacant lot, tied to a stake with wire, and sent to their reward in a cloud of smoke. If a public execution cannot be safely carried out, then a very poetic Retribution Alternative at Night, Dammit (RAAND) sounds like a workable solution!

The next action should be an investigation to determine who is behind the indoctrination of the morons previously captured and executed. Cut that snake off at the head, and no more snake problems.

The Fish and Game Dept was after mountain lions that were stalking humans. Of course, nut cases like Rodney Coronado think it's okay for mountain lions to stalk and kill humans.
