The Coast Guard is in search of a fishing boat 50 miles off the coast of Clearwater, FL. Reportedly, the boat is carrying three NFL players, including one who plays for the Detroit Lions.

The 21-foot boat apparently left Clearwater Pass on Saturday with four people aboard and likely encountered choppy conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.

Doesn't sound good. Its interesting they mention only the Detroit Lion player, which means its probably a pretty high profile one. Daunte Culpepper lives not too far from there.

I do feel badly for these guys and their families. I also hope Roethlisberger doesn’t fish!

WXYZ is a Detroit station, that's probably why they mentioned the Lions angle. Regardless, it sounds scary for all involved.

Detroit Lions have a “high-profile” player? Dude, this ain’t the 80s!

While I hope they find the guys alive and ok, some could argue that the Detroit Lions have been lost at sea for more than a decade...

My prayers for their safe return, but this is not going to have a happy ending.

Good Lord! What sort of fool would venture out in the Gulf in 21’ foot boat with winds and seas like we’ve had the past three days?

We’ve seen this happen too many times.

That’s my question! Why take a 21 foot fishing boat into the Gulf, especially in questionable conditions? Heck, I know guys who won’t take a fishing boat on Lake Michigan when its choppy! I wonder if they were meeting another larger boat somewhere and were going to tie-off?

Nah, he likes riding motorcycles without a helmet.

The Gulf is in one of its nasty moods....windy...rough seas.

So many people do not pay good attention to weather conditions before going offshore.

Their little (21 foot) boat wouldn't stand a chance against 8 to 10 foot seas (in today's marine forecast) with a "Norther" blowing through.

ABC news in Clearwater Florida is reporting that the Coast Guard is searching for a missing fishing boat about 50 miles off-shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the report there are 4 people on board the vessel 3 of whom are NFL players. One player is reportedly from the Raiders, one from the reportedly from the Detroit Lions and no word yet on the other.

The fishermen were supposed to return sometime after dark but never did, a friend call the coast guard around 1:30 am and reported them missing.

Air and marine crews from the Sand Key and Clearwater Coast Guard stations are searching a 750 square mile area west of Clearwater Pass.

————— Snip

The size of the boat is fine in good weather. We run out 80-100 miles in a 26’ to the oil rigs. Best fishing in North America!

But, not under the kinds of conditions of the past week. That is simply foolish.

I they went out in a 21 footer, if they are still afloat, they have been fighting for their lives. Fifteen foot waves and 30 kts wind.

Why all the mystery? Who are they?

Joe Blow always gets named when he’s missing at sea.

Now I’m almost certain its Culpepper. He used to be a Raider.
