BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A rare March snow blanketed much of Alabama and winter storm warnings are in effect along the East Coast.
Scott Unger of the National Weather Service office in Birmingham says a winter storm warning for Alabama is in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday mostly for several northern and eastern counties with much of the rest of the state under a winter storm advisory.
Unger says snow accumulations could reach up to five inches in some areas of Alabama.

One of a series of snowflakes that are the product of an elaborate computer model designed to replicate the complex growth of snow crystals, is pictured in this undated photograph released on February 9, 2009. The random, symmetrical beauty of snowflakes has been recreated in the computer program, U.S. researchers said on February 25, 2009. It took four years for two mathematicians from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of California, Davis, to develop the computer model's theory and perform the computations. I’m in Huntsville. I had about 1.5 inches on my car but the ground because it has been so warm lately barely had a dusting.
What a great pic! Bravo.
I’m in Huntsville which is next door to Decatur. We got about a half inch — enough for a few snowballs and maybe a snow munchkin. It’s melting pretty quickly now.
I hate frickin' liberals.
I am 70 miles west of Decatur on HW 72...we got 4-5 inches last night. Roads are not too bad here but just West of here I-40 from Jackson to Memphis is gridlocked. 72 from Corinth to Memphis gets worse the closer to Memphis one gets. I live in the NE Corner of Mississippi...where Alabama, Ms, and Tennessee comes together.
My sister lives in Roswell and it's beginning to snow there now, so your niece in Decatur will probably get to see some snow this afternoon.
We're getting a heavy snowfall along with thunder and lightning down here in Coweta county, and I as best I can remember I have only seen it snowing and lightning at the same time but once before. My grandkids are rolling up snow in the yard to make snowmen and I'm worrying about nearby lightning strikes, this is weird weather today.
Villa Rica Ga. was snowing hard for a while, now slacked off
just starting to stick on grass, highways clear.
That's natural--you'd expect a Deep South state like Alabama to get less snow than an Upper South state like Tennessee.
BTW, about 35 or 40 years ago I measured 16" of snow on the ground in Huntsville which isn't far from Decatur, so it's possible that your niece is seeing lots of snow over there today.
I’m 30 miles south of Nashville. We got 7 inches.
Cool pic!
