Conservative activists on Saturday named former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the winner of a poll for best 2012 GOP presidential candidate.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won 20 percent of the vote in straw poll for presidential favorites.

The poll marked the third consecutive year Romney came out on top

You think the only reason to vote for Romney over McCain was economy? LOL. I can give you a BILLION reasons to vote for Romney instead of McCain, not the least of which, ROMNEY WOULD’VE ACTUALLY TRIED TO WIN!!!

Yeah, I really do want to smack you. You call me a Romney basher after I just got done telling you how retarded you and the other bozos in the party are for voting McCain instead of Romney. Gee, that makes a lot of sense.

Btw, memo to Norman Bates: Elections are almost ALWAYS about the economy. Especially when there’s no incumbent. It’s not something you need a psychic for.

Romney is nothing more than a “Tin Man”, Used Car Salesman, Snake Oil wagon master, who just does not inspire broad support among Conservatives.

I just don't trust him, based on his past history. He tells us one thing but does something else very different. He also displays a rigid personality and fails to put people at ease.

If the GOP goes back to what they know will fail and picks him to be the candidate, it will convince me that there truly is no hope left for the Republican Party.

Thanks for the (further) information. I would not and cannot and will not ever vote for Romney.
It’s never even been a possibility in my mind, frankly. I am not going to be responsible for helping drive the GOP even further to the left, left unable to effectively block Democrats in their lunacy.
We are now reaping the direct results of the GOP having supported John McCain who:
1) began touting bank bailouts last March or so
2)was vocally in favor of a more expensive bailout of mortgages than even Obama’s plan
3) took time out of his to stop his campaign to make sure that TARP got passed.

I have no desire to repeat anything of that sort with Romney, who did more than his fair share of “compromising” with Democrats in Massachusetts on key issues that should never be compromised on in the first place.

I am not supporting a headlong hurdle to the left, regardless of how brave the individual was in service (McCain) or how nice their hair is (Romney).

My confidence in conservatism is boundless and unwavering. The same can't be said for your posturing and whining on this thread. I seriously doubt you agree with conservatism 95% of the time.

You continue to sound like someone who wants conservatism and Reaganism to just go away and hide. What else can explain the confidence you place in a liberal politico like Mitt Romney, or your defense of a moderate like John McCain in the last election cycle.

Today we see Rep Eric Cantor repudiating Rush Limbaugh's speech at CPAC yesterday. Some FReepers have posted that Michael Steele has also taken the same tact by denouncing Rush's conservative rhetoric from yesterday.

When it comes to your denunciation and opposition to my staunch conservatism, frankly, I'm in good company today. If you want to continue your support for moderate-centrist-liberals, have at it. Just don't expect conservative FReepers like myself to be silent about your spineless political rants.

You are dead-on accurate here. Good points all!

Picking a loser like Romney to try again would be the biggest disaster/mistake the GOP could ever make. Bringing Romney, or McCain for that matter, back, would be like recycling used toilet paper. It just ain't gonna happen.

You are posting bizarre lies and you will not post a link to your sources.

Post the link to your sources like the one about his mother living and working in Saudi Arabia.

Esquire Magazine: (Jindal's mother) "Raj switched from nuclear physics to the budding field of computer science and was hired by the state of Louisiana as one of its first IT people. (Thirty years later, she is still working in the same department. Technically, Bobby is her boss.)"

You don’t accept new followers very well do you?

“You call me a Romney basher after I just got done telling you how retarded you and the other bozos in the party are for voting McCain instead of Romney.”

Why don’t you start criticizing those around you right now tearing Romney to SHREDS insteading of attacking those who choose to defend him? Memo to Bull Market: get some common sense.

“Yeah, I really do want to smack you.”

Oh yeah? Grow up.

Some FReepers are still holding out hope for a RudyMcRombee victory come 2012.

Time to move on. Leave the losers and the failures behind.

Cute! Here comes the Obama Media Servants all ready to select the conservative candidate that they want to take down the road to defeat in 2012. I hope they hang in there and keep their eye on 2012 while we (hopefully) pay attention to 2010!

re: “That type of ‘compromise’ got us McCain, instead of a real conservative.”

Oops, you're responding to the wrong person! That was written TO me. I too was complaining about how the search for the perfect conservative has become the enemy of the good conservative or more conservative.

Until we find enough people who will work like hell for their candidate, and support the person who eventually gets the nod whether it's their candidate or not, we are going to be stuck with the last man standing every time.

Here we are in the first two months of what has already proved to be a disastrous Obama presidency and the mere mention of Romney brings out the snide, nasty responses.

I guess there are some who feel the conservative cause is better served by an Obama presidency than a McCain presidency, but darned if I can see it. Even at this early stage I feel America would have been better off with ANY of the Republican candidates than with Obama.

We've got some work to do in adjusting attitudes if we ever hope to get back some control of the federal government. Otherwise the Liberals will just sit back and let us destroy ourselves then run a populist candidate that appeals to Liberals.

Exactly. Also called “appealing to moderates” and being willing (or anxious?) to “work together with Democrats”, “reaching across the aisle”, and the loathesome “bi-partisanship”.

"I seriously doubt you agree with conservatism 95% of the time."

There you go assuming again. You know, that arrogance thing we weren't talking about...

"You continue to sound like someone who wants conservatism and Reaganism to just go away and hide."

Yes, because I chose to defend someone who was taking over-the-top character attacks I must want conservatism and Reaganism to go away. Uh huh, sure.

"What else can explain the confidence you place in a liberal politico like Mitt Romney"

Let's see he campaigned as a pro-life fiscal conservative citing the Reagan coalition of conservatives as his ideal. You don't have to believe him but fine. Other people can - that's why we have *CAMPAIGNS*.

"your defense of a moderate-conservative like John McCain in the last election cycle."

Simple, let me spell it out for you:

1)John McCain was the furthest candidate we had from Bush in a very anti-Bush year.

2)John McCain had a reasonably conservative 83 ACU lifetime rating. I felt that was a good balance given the anti-GOP climate.

3)John McCain wore the uniform of his country unlike any other top tier candidate and was a war hero. The GOP has always honored our vets by nominating one since 1952. I saw no reason to stop this in 2008.

4)I recognized in 2006, when I loathed John McCain, that he was going to be the nominee anyway. I looked hard at the candidates and decided to back him, largely because when I examined his platform it was surprisingly better than some of the anti-McCain rhetoric would admit to.

5)My support had next to zero impact on the outcome of the race. Many if not most of the people on my ping list were not necessarily primary McCain supporters. I provided the list as a service to those who had interest in or wished to follow the McCain campaign.

6)I doubt it matters what I say because you are not listening and are totally closed off from anything I say. Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me you're bigger than that.

"When it comes to your denunciation and opposition to my staunch conservatism, frankly, I'm in good company today."

Where did I denounce anything conservative you've stated other than your poor attitude (which has nothing to do with conservatism)? Name one issue. Not personality. Issue.

Not true. Ron Paul is the one who qualified for that status. Instead the GOP nominated John "billionaire banker bailout" McCain. McCain was actually quite close to Bush on the issues.

Well said. 2008 was a bad year for us and was going to be tough no matter WHO was nominated. Fortuntely for 2012 I see the pendulum swinging back in our direction.

“20% of the vote? And this makes him the candidate?”

Really! Did any of the folks commenting here actually notice the audience at CPAC? Many were the 20 somethings, doubtless the staffs of the Congressional and Senate offices were mostly vacant during the conference as their “aids” were at CPAC chewing bubble gum, blowing bubbles and going to parties that precluded their attendance at early morning meetings. Hey, that’s who is running Washington these days. And some here propose to pay attention to that groups choice of the conservative (note I did NOT say Republican) candidate.

I think I’m going to barf!

Ron Paul was not a serious candidate in my view. Just the other day he was at CPAC singing cheese-eating surrender-monkey songs about AFGHANISTAN. He said we must stop fighting now because we can’t afford it. Sorry but getting Bin Laden is worth it.

And it’s sad too because I find much of Ron Paul’s fiscal message to be attractive. He ruins it though with the cheese-eating surrender-monkey stuff.

The concerns about Romney are legitimate. He has no real conservative record to fall back on. Just words. I choose to believe those words, and I choose to believe Ann Coulter, and I choose to believe anyone McCain hates so much is probably a fine conservative. But convincing others to accept that is difficult without a record.

We should be having this conversation while a President Romney figures out how to cut taxes for 100% of Americans, build real borders as quickly as possible, and plans the next course of action to defeat terrorism.

But no, all you Romney bashers and McCain supporters blew it. You chose instead to open a clear path to installing Barack Hussein Obama into the executive mansion. How’s that for criticism?
