Conservative Activists Still Favor Romney

If the Republican Party’s conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.

For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.

He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.

A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.

Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.

Well, now that depends on what activist you’re talking about. This one wouldn’t vote for the RINO on a bet.

I wish people actually new the man's record before touting him as a fiscal conservative. He pushed Bush AND McCain to go with the bailout, he was for bailing out the auto manufacturers early last year (before the MI primary) and then when it's convenient is against it. He was for abortion, against abortion and not supports Meg Whitman, who is pro-abortion for Governor of California... oh and she is anti-drilling, too...

Now, all of a sudden Politico is once again full of Romney stories -- like Romney blames Bush for the stimulus... Politico is a liberal rag and they were bought by Romney last year and looks like he has them again.

Why don’t we all put some of our own choices into a hat?

My choice is Ray Everett! Or Wafa Sultan , who is an Arab American and speaks fluent bin Laden speak.

Who better to deal with the terror threat than a woman who can get on al Jazeera any time she wants?

Bolton/Sultan 2012, thats the ticket for me.

I don’t know there is a lot of difference between Mitt and Obama... even Obamacare is the same blue print as Romneycare and look how broke that has left the state of MA.

not only that, he is supporting Whitman for Gov of California, SHE is pro-abortion and anti-offshore drilling.

Romney only says what is convenient for the moment, nothing more, nothing less.

Palin’s daughter is an adult now. SHE contacted Greta because SHE wants to be an advocate against teen pregnancy, that was a courageous thing to do, too bad your friend was too narrow minded to see it.

I see. So thinking on their feet and besting Dems is preferable to actual policy? Who said this, ‘I raised taxes because children need highways’?

A conservative agreeing with a liberal on Sarah Palin is not a conservative.

“If your view is formed from reading FR, it will be distorted”.

Had you considered other words other than “distorted” in your sentence, or is that the word which gives the sentence the meaning you meant?

I am not attacking you, but am curious if another word might not have been more apt.

Influenced, hindered, guided?

My views were given a given a place to grow. As were yours.
No?

“If you remember Nixon was written off after 1960, only to win in 1968.”

Come to think of it he had been a two term vice president.

What point are you making?

The real story here is that there is no front runner. Let us focus on the Illinois senate seat, and the governorships up for grabs in November, and retaking the house in 2010.

“Had you considered other words other than “distorted” in your sentence, or is that the word which gives the sentence the meaning you meant?

If somebody concludes from reading FR that it expresses accurately the views of conservatives, I think that conclusion is off the mark (distorted).

If a word other than “distorted” works better, so be it. I have been here 10+ years. I pay attention.

This website is heavily SoCon, and I think is is far from the overall electorate in that regard, and far from representing all potential GOP voters.

This website dislikes McCain, dislikes Romney. Yet they both finished far ahead of Hunter and Tancredo—two of the FR favorites.

That is what I meant by “distorted.” I appreciate your kind request that I clarify.

“What point are you making?”

That Romney or Palin or George Allen could be the strongest contender in 3 years, inspite of their weaknesses to date.

It won’t automatically be a new face. It could be an old one. I would rather it be a very strong contender, whatever the source.
