Conservative Activists Still Favor Romney

If the Republican Party’s conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.

For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.

He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.

A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.

Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.

A liberal friend of mine made a comment about Palin- “she can’t even run her own household, her daughter should have never been interviewed”. She has some good points.

Then stick with your liberal friends, and fill the forms for the Democrat party.*sigh*

Get real... the stuff you are hitting Palin with is base pettiness.

You know the other son of Reagan and the son of Buckley? Flaming liberals. Daughter of Cheney? Lesbian. Guess their parents also failed at forming their characters.

Judging Palin by her adult daughter's words (what offensive thing did she even say?) is catty baseness.

"THIS is how we keep LOSING elections.

We ALSO would have taken McCain over the obama experiment too... How well did THAT work?

No. We do NOT need a “_______” is better than obama. We need someone we can STAND behind and who will STAND for us. Not simply the better of two lame-o’s."

My point is that the country would be in better hands RIGHT NOW if Mitt were President instead of Obama.

Just who do you think is this future star of conservatism and the Republican Party?

*Crickets chirping*

Fiscal conservatism eventually leads to social conservatism in my book.

What sort of fiscal Conservative cheerleads for the bail-out as Romney did?

I don’t know about his five military age sons, but he couldn’t handle any of those well enough to get one to enlist, 9/11 didn’t touch even one of them.

Romney's sons had the gall to claim that helping daddy get elected is their form of service for the country./puke

Meanwhile Gov. Palin's son is serving in a Stryker Brigade in Iraq, his unit recently suffering three casualties.

But hey! Didn't you know? Palin isn't "the real deal", "intellectual enough" and "damaged goods".

Give me those "damaged goods" over a RINO any day.

There are plenty of atheist, homosexual, pro-abortion capitalists and fiscal conservatives out there.

I don’t get the support for Romney unless it’s because people want an attractive-looking candidate.

If that were the deciding factor 100% of votes would go for Palin.

Well except the Log Cabin Republicans.

I’m a conservative and I would never support Romney, just based on his lack of support for the Second Amendment.

He is a fairly good candidate, but I just do not trust him and Obama would probably clean his clock. Time willl tell.

It just can not be true that we've learned so little from our brush with McCain that we'd turn around and settle for Romney.

If this is really the best the GOP can manage, then I'm not ready to re-join.

It's time to be a real conservative and stand up to these liberal bastards. Romney is a weak response

"Romney's sons had the gall to claim that helping daddy get elected is their form of service for the country./puke"

============================================================

It was even worse than that!

That's where Rachel Griffiths got up and asked Romney if any of his five sons were serving in the military, and if not, how did they plan to support the war against terrorism?"
"The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told the crowd, adding, " One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I'd be a great president."

There were 1757 votes...59% under the age of 26, 59% male.

Not exactly representative of the GOP.

It’s easy to see what happened. Jindal & Palin split the conservative vote.

If Obama is not vulnerable in 2012, Romney will run unopposed for the nomination. If Obama is vulnerable, it’s Bobby Jindal’s to take.

The only difference I see between McCain and Romney is Romney is 100X better at manipulating conservatives. This guy tells us what he knows we want to hear while expecting us to just forget the past with him. He’s a fraud IMHO.

If the GOP is going to recover, they’ve got to clean the slate and bring in fresh blood. Romney wants a cabinet job in Treasury/Labor/or Commerce, great. But as POTUS, he would do nothing to expand the conservative cause.

I have to tell you though, today watching Rush’s speech that has got to be one of the best speeches in conservatism I’ve heard in a long-time. If a politician wants a blue-print for going out and communicating with voters, they’d better study this speech long and hard.

I heard the poll was taken before Jindal made his rebuttal speech.

We just returned from 3 days @ CPAC & after
hearing Romney speak on Friday we were NOT
impressed. Country Club Rep. & we don’t need
Bush III.

Mason Dixon

PS Yes, the CPAC straw poll numbers favored
Romney which surprised me!

“Twenty percent is not “hands down”. Eighty percent DON’T want him.”

that’s not necessarily true. There’s a big difference between “I don’t mind him/her as second choice” and “go away, RINO!”
