During much of my live the watchword for keeping the economy going was “Waste not, want.”

Disposable meant you keep buying stuff and keep people employed and making that stuff.

Now we must return to the watchwords that my parents grew up under.

Waste not, want not.
A penny saved is a penny earned.
A stitch in time saves nine (for kids who don’t even know how to repair clothes or darn holes in socks)

Are you going to teach your kids about truck gardening?

Waste not, want not.

Those were words I heard so often as a kid, they were burned into my very character. Even in the best of times, I've found myself unable to be wasteful, or to tolerate it in others.

I'm sure that one day, my kids will tell you the same thing about their childhood.
