Privacy advocates are issuing warnings about a new radio chip plan that ultimately could provide electronic identification for every adult in the U.S. and allow agents to compile attendance lists at anti-government rallies simply by walking through the assembly.
The proposal, which has earned the support of Janet Napolitano, the newly chosen chief of the Department of Homeland Security , would embed radio chips in driver's licenses, or "enhanced driver's licenses."
"Enhanced driver's licenses give confidence that the person holding the card is the person who is supposed to be holding the card, and it's less elaborate than REAL ID," Napolitano said in a Washington Times report.
REAL ID is a plan for a federal identification system standardized across the nation that so alarmed governors many states have adopted formal plans to oppose it. However, a privacy advocate today told WND that the EDLs are many times worse.
Radio talk show host and identity chip expert Katherine Albrecht said REAL ID earned the opposition of Christians because of its resemblance to the biblical "mark of the beast," civil libertarians opposed it for its "big brother" connotations and others worried about identity theft issues with the proposed databases.
"We got rid of the REAL ID program, but [this one] is way more insidious," she said.
Enhanced driver's licenses have built-in radio chips providing an identifying number or information that can be accessed by a remote reading unit while the license is inside a wallet or purse.
The technology already had been implemented in Washington state, where it is promoted as an alternative to a passport for traveling to Canada. So far, the program is optional.

Barry is the Antichrist.
I'm afraid we will all wind up with both.....
“But, but, we can trust our government Can’t we?”

Not just no but HELL NO!
We can thank the folks at MADD for this. Their relentless year after year program of eroding individual rights is succeeding.
Ball-peen hammer. Small one. Smash the little f***er. It really pisses me off when administrative types make seriously bad decisions based on something they think is a “cool” idea but have no clue what the Hell they are doing.
The idea of RFID is ripe for abuse due primarily to the technical fact, something that escapes these liberal arts idiots, that someone can use a handheld reader and gather the information these RFID chips allow to be scanned from inches away.
A microchip serves absolutley no purpose. None.
I think accidentally microwaving your license would be a surer bet.
“Enhanced driver’s licenses have built-in radio chips providing an identifying number or information that can be accessed by a remote reading unit while the license is inside a wallet or purse.”
I’m not sure about the ability to read these things while in your wallet. My experience with these devices is that they have to be very near the scanner. There is nothing wrong with a chip that contains the same data written on the license as long as you have to present it to be read, and you are aware it is being looked at.
Most scanners aren’t designed to read them from more than a few inches away. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
There may be tradeoffs involved: a long-range “pirate” scanner might fry some chips or fail to interoperate with marginal tags, violate FCC rules, or require more expensive/sensitive components. None of these are a problem for somebody with malicious intent.
If they can do it to those, they will do it to you. Sooner or later.
RFID and GPS are two completely different technologies.
Not to mention requiring it in order to get a new e-mail address (or keep your existing one). Too many bad folks, not yet known to law enforcement, hide behind anonymous e-mail addresses for their nefarious activities.
Symbolic tea parties are a crock of crap.
Lives, fortunes and sacred honor has a proven history.

Motor Vehicle Division
Enhanced Drivers License Project
Summary
The enhanced Drivers License Project began in May 1997, with the intention of creating a drivers license that would have more security features. Now, over a year later, the Motor Vehicle Division awards the EDL contract to Viisage Technologies, a Division of Lau Technologies. The Enhanced Drivers License is a combination of three technologies; first, a digital image that is stored as part of the driving record, second, a digital signature that is also captured and stored, and third, a magnetic stripe that encodes the printed information on the license. Besides enhancing the security of the license, the enhanced Drivers License will create additional customer service opportunities for the Division.

It will work just fine. It's embedded in plastic.
My company ID has one embedded. I just press my wallet against a reader by the door to get in the building. These readers are short range (inches), but that's just because it's more important that the reader be inexpensive and durable than for it to have long range. If you wanted to spend a few hundred bucks you could have a reader sensitive enough to pick up a card from a range of yards. Also, remember the federal government has the technology to pick up a signal from a 100-watt transmitter in a satellite orbiting Mars.
If they don't throw the illegals out when they catch them, then what value is this to law abiding citizens? None.
The Long Range RFID Reader network can simultaneously read multiple RFID Asset Tags at ranges up to 450 feet (free air), and can also register and report the disappearance or unauthorized movement of individual RFID tags. This is especially helpful in inventory management systems where a single Long Range RFID Reader can monitor a number of tagged assets and report to a Host Computer or Access Control System any change of status of a specific asset tag and its associated employee.Mount a few of those in overhead highway signs and you could track RFID chips in all the cars passing that point in the highway. With the sensitivity needed for a 450-foot range, at ranges of 10 yards you would probably get good readings even through a metal car body (which is not all THAT good in shielding against RF, otherwise your cell phone wouldn't work in your car, now would it?)
More expensive scanners have ranges of over 100 yards. Check out this long-range RFID system for upscale homes, where you can equip your kids, dogs and servants with their own tags:
Unlimited Applications!

Wrap the license in lead foil.
Oops my “radio chip” just rubbed up against a powerful rare-earth magnet. How’d that happen?
