Congress finds consensus on Iraq plan

WASHINGTON - After years of bitterly debating whether to set a timetable for troop withdrawals in Iraq, Congress has agreed to one.

The general consensus came Friday in the form of statements endorsing President Barack Obama's plan to bring home roughly two-thirds of the U.S. military force in Iraq by August 2010.

It was a compromise of sorts for the Democratic president, who campaigned on the promise of bringing every soldier and Marine home from Iraq within 16 months of taking office. His plan paves the way for some 100,000 troops to come home and as many as 50,000 troops to remain behind to train Iraqi forces and protect U.S. interests.

... the Congress that could never agree on how to win the Iraq war found common ground.

They found common ground alright -- they found a sure way to lose the war AND set up the 50,000 troops they plan to leave behind for a first class slaughter.

May God Damn their traitorous souls.

Zer0 is such a big hero.

The Iraqi gov has repeatedly asked for withdrawl and/or drawdown dates in 2010 and 2011, and they’ve been saying this since at least 2006.

But to my recollection it has always been planned to retain “enduring bases” such as Balad/Anaconda (and “50,000 troops”). And my observation when I was there is that way too much money was sunk into Balad to consider giving it easily. Besides, the Iraqi military has few (zero) planes to make use of Balad.

The notion of giving up what for several years was an improved and capable “second busiest airport in the *world* after Heathrow” is completely ridiculous. We’ll be running Balad/Anaconda for many decades into the future.

Of course they have. Republicans are supporting a plan stolen from Bush and claimed it as his own.

Democrats are supporting a lie they want to push as “Obama’s exit strategy”.

My bet is by Christmas 2010 the last US forces will be bugging out with panicked Iraqis clinging to the skids of the helicopters as Iranian tanks roll into Baghdad. It will be Saigon 1974 redux.
