More than 1,000 people braved chilly temperatures downtown today to protest President Barack Obama's stimlulus aprogram and to throw tea into the Mississippi River.

The gathering was organized by several local conservatives. There was no official crowd estimate, but the gathering filled roughly one fourth of the grand staircase from the Arch grounds down to the levee.

Among the speakers was former football Cardinals tight end Jackie Smith, who took a bullhorn and said, "We are mad as hell and we need to stay mad as hell. Don't let up."

Smith asked the crowd if this was their first protest rally, and most raised their hands.

Bill Hennessy, said he got the idea for the tea party from comments made last week by CNBC business commentator Rick Santelli about the stimulus program. Santelli urged people to have another Boston tea party.

Before the crowd went down to the NMississippi River, Hennessy urged everyone to rip open their tea bags and dump the tea without throwing the paper into the river. The group ended the 50-minute rally by lining up on the river's edge and doing as asked.

Ping with updates and news stories on yesterday’s tea parties.

The FReepers on this ping list were cobbled together from yesterday’s posters on all the Tea Party threads. If I’ve included anyone who doesn’t want to be pinged, I apologize. I will take you off the list.

Likewise, please advise if you know anyone else who would like to be added.

Great stuff all you guys and many thanks for all of us who have to work in this obamaconomy trying and eek out a living.

Working a huge sale in Pensacola Fla. its really hard to find any Ozero supporters anywhere other than those of color who blindly support anything Ozero does.

If commandante zero keeps up at his current pace I predict that the house will be ours in 2010 and very close in the Senate.

Scroll through this thread and note how via the alternative media, the “word” got out. While there were stories from the Drive-Bys, it seems bloggers were able to do video, pics and stories of a quality to equal real “journalists.”

“Many to many” before our very eyes. And God has let us live long enough to be right in the big middle of it!!

I am optimistic about the future!

We had an Outstanding crowd - local news is reporting the turn out was in the 1000’s. I am proud to be from Greenville, SC. Last night, I saw history in the making. This was the first time in the my life I ever protested for something but it will not be my last time. In just five days, Greenville turns out thousands, we can make a difference.

Best analysis yet. As I said on a posted thread here last week, “It Isn’t Time Yet . . . .” there IS a revolution coming, and we’ll all know when “it’s time.” These tea parties are the equivalent of the rumblings in the American Revolution that started in the 1760s and took 15 years to really ferment.
