I think the Democrats in Congress understand that running pro-gun Democrats is a big reason they have their majority in the first place. They don’t want to endanger that.

That's only the first part of the equation. Having pro-gun Democrats in Congress enables a majority that can ram through the elements of their agenda critical to consolidating their power.

Once that power is consolidated (ramp up dependency on the Government so that voters must vote Democrat), they'll go after everyones' guns. By then they'll have enough seats to be able to abandon the pro-gun rights members of their caucus ... and it'll be too late to do anything effective to stop them.
