The first production four wheel automobile was produced in Kokomo Indiana by Elwood Haynes. He beat Karl Benz (Rove's twin brother at 3 removes) by a FULL YEAR.
Karl had, of course, earlier invented the German Army command motorcycle with sidecar ~ which some people still believe to be an automobile!

Actually, Belgian Jesuit Missionary Ferdinand Verbiest built the first (steam powered) automobile in China in 1672.
