The Labour life peer Lord Ahmed was today sentenced to 12 weeks in jail for dangerous driving after he admitted sending text messages from behind the wheel before a fatal road accident.
Lord Ahmed had sent several long text messages on December 25, 2007 while driving at 60mph on the M1 motorway near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Martyn Gombar, 28, a Slovakian man from Leigh, Lancashire, died when Lord Ahmed's Jaguar hit an Audi car that had crashed into the central reservation and was lying stationary across the middle and outside lanes.
Lord Ahmed pleaded guilty to dangerous driving but Mr Justice Wilkie made it clear that the offence had no causal link with the fatal accident.

Preserving Harmony for Islamic Radicals: Geert Wilders is barred from entering the United Kingdom.
By Andrew C. McCarthy
Excerpt:
Todays Britain, however, is not the Britain of Churchill and free expression, but of Jacqui Smith and multicultural hypersensitivity. Wilders intended to screen his film in the House of Lords in late January, but his trip was postponed due to the machinations of Nazir Ahmed, a Labour lord and grievance-industry agitator of the first order. As the Hudson Institutes Thomas Landen reports, Lord Ahmed threatened to mobilize 10,000 rabble-rousers to prevent Wilders from entering Parliament. When the trip was rescheduled for this week, Smiths office issued a curt letter apprising Wilders that he would not be admitted into the country. According to the letter, Wilderss statements about Muslims and their beliefs, as expressed in your film Fitna and elsewhere, would threaten community harmony and therefore public security in the U.K. Later, the Home Office laughably maintained that by barring Wilders it was perforce barring extremism, hatred, and violent messages.
It's a pretty good flick about the soccer (pardon me, FOOTBALL) "clubs" in England.
I think it might have had a slightly different name when released in the U.K.
Dat be da one.
What part of “Lord” did you miss. Part of the upper crust of England - they live under a different set of laws. I am surprised he even got 12 weeks. My guess is after the country club jail for 2-3 weeks it will be changed to home (mansion) confinement.
Thought this was same man. . .will the Brit’s wake-up or not? Or perhaps they already have; and find it is too late.
No, they go to big boys prison like everyone else. Lord Archer was sent down for Perjury for 4 years and went to Belmarsh, and Jonathan Aitkin, a former minister, went down for a similar offence and got beaten up by the inmates for being a posh Tory......
“Lord” Ahmed? “LORD” Ahmed???
I thought a “Lord” had to be a knight. And I thought Knights had to be Christians.
The Brits are leading the pack of western European Islamic Serfs - the Dhimmis to end all Dhimmis.
A Lord is a non-religious designation.
Lords have been Protestant, Catholic and Jewish. And in more modern times, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim. And of course atheist.
That’s unfortunate. I thought Britain was offcially a Christian country. Wonder when it changed.
Unfortunate.
When they knighted the Beetles, I knew it was over.
Since at least Victorian time. Sir Nathaniel Rothschild was the first Jewish peer in 1885.
Ping
The only one of the Beatles to be knighted is Sir Paul McCartney in 1997.
He, along with the others received an MBE in 1965, but the MBE is not a Knighthood - considerably lower than that - I hold a similar level Honour myself, it’s nice to have, but it’s not a big deal.
Historically - going back to the middle ages - Knights were Christian, but since about 1560 Knighthoods have been awarded in Britain for services to society and there's been no requirement that the recipients are of any particular faith. The first Jewish Knight received the accolade in 1700 - Sir Solomon de Medina for his services in raising money and supplying provisions to the English Army.
It is, in the modern era, a civil honour for service.
'Lord' is more complex. Some are hereditary, more and more are Life Peerages, which in theory are awarded for service to the nation - and some are. In other cases, it's become simply a convenient way for a government to put somebody into political office without worrying about getting them elected to Parliament - give them a Peerage that puts them in the House of Lords. Lord Ahmed (the first Moslem to receive a Life Peerage and the second Moslem Lord - Henry Stanley, the Third Baron Stanley of Alderley and Second Baron Eddisbury, converted to Islam in 1862) is pretty much one of this last type.
