Add four-day school weeks for high school students to the list of options the Broward County School Board is weighing to save money.

During a Tuesday workshop, board members directed Schools Superintendent James Notter to study the idea to prepare for up to $160 million in possible budget cuts from the state for the 2009-2010 school year.

Our local city government is considering a 4 day work week (4 ten hour days) in order to conserve on utilities and costs associated with keeping offices open one extra day a week.

I sort of “get it”...but if you’re going to occupy the offices for 40 hours, then lights and electricity (excluding maybe ac/heating costs) would be the same, wouldn’t they?

Hi Fawn,

My high school in Colorado (Hoehne) was the first one in the state of CO to enact a 4 day school week in 1980. My senior year was under this new arrangement.

They are still using the system today.

As I understand it, there are savings with power (scaling room temps down for 3 days) as well as fuel.

My old school district was/is a rural one. Heck, some kids had to ride a bus (suburban) @ 70 miles one way.

4 day school week? That’s okay. They’ll still qualify for Pell Grants.

Parents won’t go for it - what would they do with the kids, then? Older ones would be left at home alone to drink and fornicate, I assume, but early-elementary children have to be supervised.

Could be a business opportunity for “Friday schools,” though. I’ve considered opening an after-school care and tutoring program, but haven’t wanted to be tied down every day. Once a week would be quite workable.

A college student can often arrange a two day or three day per week schedule. My daughter has classes on four days this semester. It’s just the way the school put the courses together.

Makes sense to me. They brought up ‘gas’ for teachers and buses. The teachers are always looking for ways to get out of babysitting...

Teachers will want a pay raise because they will have more free time to fill up with shopping, movies and other forms of entertainment and it all costs money.

Unfortunately the parents don't have a say. They enacted this in a school district near me. From what I've been told, since it's a school decision not thought to affect the parents, they don't have to hold a meeting about it. If it was something like increasing taxes, then they would have to hold a meeting about it.

Bisbee School District in AZ goes to 4 day school week.

Interesting. I wonder if the school board will be re-elected ... around here, I think they’d be toast in two years.

"Older ones would be left at home alone to drink and fornicate"

Well, at least they'd be doing it with their peers, rather than with old, fugly teachers. Must always look on the bright side. ;-)
