N.Korea Fires Artillery Near Border

North Korean artillery forces staged an intensive firing exercise on Tuesday near the Northern Limit Line, the de-facto border in the West Sea, putting South Korean military authorities on high alert.

According to the Defense Ministry, North Korean artillery batteries deployed in Haeju and on the Ongjin Peninsula fired dozens of shells into the West Sea in the morning and afternoon. Some residents on Yeonpyeong Island reported hearing the report of guns several times between 9 to 10 a.m.

The ministry said the firing seems to be part of "routine winter exercises" and should not be considered a provocation.

North Korea has more frequently exposed its coastal artillery batteries in the region of late and has been stepping up exercises to be more combat-ready. A military officer here said, "If they launch any provocation in the West Sea, they will highly likely use their coast artillery batteries rather than naval vessels as a means of attack."

According to some latest news report, N. Korea would stage military exercise in an area of Yellow Sea which they claim as their own but not recognized by S. Korea or others(south of NLL.) Then draw S. Korea's military reaction first, then move onto their own plan for escalation, arguing that they are only responding.

If these are fixed artillery positions, all they’re doing is providing South Korea with targets for counterbattery fire.

But I’ll bet South Korea knows where they are anyway.
