Burris defies leader’s call to step down [Grahamnesty defends Burris]
The Hill, Washington DC ^ | 2009-02-24 | J. Taylor Rushing

A defiant Roland Burris returned to the Senate on Tuesday, staring down a resignation call from his Illinois colleague and a muted reaction from fellow Democrats.

Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he privately urged Burris to step down and suggested Burris’s hold on his seat has become more precarious as he faces an Illinois perjury investigation and a Senate Ethics Committee probe.

When informed of Durbin’s comments, Burris told The Hill: “I have no reaction to that.”

Burris’s Democratic colleagues continued to stay silent Tuesday, suggesting an absence of public support. He participated in the party’s weekly policy lunch, but a key Democrat said the situation is simply “awkward.”

“The circumstances by which he got here and the continuing questions that keep coming up surrounding his appointment just make it awkward,” Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) told The Hill.

From the article:

Likewise, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called on Burris’s critics to stop their calls for his resignation at least until the Senate Ethics Committee completes its investigation. Graham said that to do otherwise would be to judge the Illinois senator prematurely.

“Obviously there’s some concerns there, but the way you air out those concerns is the system within the Senate to do that,” said Graham. “I’m saying there’s a process here, and I’m a big believer that, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, we’re not going to find you guilty of something until you’ve had the chance to tell your side of the story.”

Oh my.

What the HELL is wrong with Lindsay? Even Dhims are telling Burris to resign!!

Then that's a reason to keep Burris in office, as an embarrassment who'll be vulnerable in 2010.

This is a good thing.

The longer Burris is in the Senate, the more investigation, and more embarrassment for the Dems. Of course they want him to resign. This is also killing the chance to reelect a Dem.

I hope he’s there for the next year...it serves the Dems right.

Look here Cheddar Cat, we Republicans benefit from having Burris in the Senate rather than someone else who will use the next two years before the general election to begin her campaign.

He's going nowhere.

The only Democrats calling for Burris to resign are those who wish to SELL THE SEAT AGAIN!

Frankly, it's not possible to think that at this late stage in his life that Senator Durbin has become concerned with honesty and integrity. He's the puke he compared our troops to Nazi SS folks ~ man has no patriotism, he's anti-American, he's a liar, and he's fundamentally dishonest.

IGNORE HIM.

Gotta agree with Lindsey on this one. Burris needs to say there as long as he can. Republicans should say resignation is "pre-mmature" at this stage -- and rather than make a case for or against him -- just say he is "Innocent until proven guilty"

If the Senate Dems want him out, they can conduct a looooooooong, drawn out, through investigation, prove corruption beyond a doubt, and THEN vote to expel him. Otherwise I want him to stay there day and night, and hopefully win the 2010 RAT primary. Burris is LEAST electable candidate the Dems could run from Illinois, and they know it -- THAT'S why the RATs are so hellbent on having him resign.

The GOP needs to be careful not to overplay the attacks on Burris right now or else he might ACTUALLY resign and the Dems will replace him with a "popular" RAT like Lisa Madigan who will retain the seat in 2010 easily.

The recent Chandra Levy case being solved in proof of that. I remember when it hit the news in 2001, the useful idiot conservatives DEMANDED Condit be purged from Congress IMMEDIATELY. They even crossed over and vote in the RAT primary to make SURE it happened, and got themselves a squeaky-clean Condit clone (without the baggage) who coasted to victory in November. Now the seat is RAT forever. That would have been a GOP pickup if the useful idiots hadn't overreached and would have been content to let Condit fester for a few months and be the face of the RAT party in the November election.

Can someone please grab the scruff of freepers who repeat Chicago machine talking points (”Burris needs to go immediately”, “State Legislatures should be able to pick whoever they want as Senator, we can’t trust Illinois voters to make that decision” “Norm Coleman deserves to lose to Al Franken” “Anyone prosecuted by Fitzgerald is an innocent victim of an overzealous firebrand”) and EXTRACT them from this forum?

It’s bad enough when we Illinoisans have to up with hearing Daley/Durbin/Madigan/Obama/Reid spew those talking points over and over again. We shouldn’t have to hear it out of mouths of ignorant “conservatives” too.

I live near Chicago, and I think that Burris will probably finish this term. In 2010, who will replace him? I think the republican candidates will be Congressmen Mark Kirk (my congressman) and Peter Roskam. The Democrats will be Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. If so, who will run for those four seats? I hope that St. Rep. Elizabeth Coulson and former St. Rep. Terry Parke (both Republicans) will run for Kirk’s seat.
