"The incident began at Belmont and Weber, when a police officer noticed a driver of a BMW possibly picking up a prostitute. The officer attempted to chase the driver, but ultimately stopped for safety reasons."

"Police arrived at the building to find the suspect on the second floor loft swinging a two and half foot pipe. One officer deployed his taser on the man, while four other officers fired at him. Police Chief Jerry Dyer says that overall 5-8 rounds were fired, but the suspect was not injured by the gunfire."

I sure hope the officer is OK, but that’s some pretty sloppy shooting!

Strange deal. Happened before the morning drive. Suspect prostitution not the issue. Chief rushed to scene from court appearance to control flow of information.

That sort of jumps out doesn't it?

I think that the officer was trying to stop the driver because he observed him trying to pick up a prostitute. The driver fled. He shouldn’t have. Even with misdemeanor warrants it is unlikely the jail would have held him long due to overcrowding.

What is strange is the time table. The initial events occured before the school commute but news on a prominent local radio station was sketchy at best (a chase, a ramming, possible hostages, gunfire). Apparently most of the action was concluded by mid morning but almost no details were released until late morning followed by a sketchy summary by 5 p.m., not from public safety sources. 10 hours to release a secquence; almost all from civilian eye witnesses. Something is strange.

I first read the account in the Bee online edition. It was hugely confusing!
