Posted on 02/24/2009 8:14:59 AM PST by Ultra Sonic 007

Okay everyone, welcome to the general Alabama thread on Free Republic!

Use this thread to post interesting news, tidbits, plans, meeting times, or just to converse with your fellow people of Alabama. This thread will be used to properly coordinate FR activism and various other activities...and, if things go well, serve as the proper thread for Alabama FR chapters to plan and organize.

Hope you all make good use of it!

Brief update for those who have confirmed coming to the 02/27 7:30 PM meeting at Ruby Tuesday's at Hoover in the Galleria (also pinging those who have expressed interest, but with confirmation pending).

The Google Map of Ruby Tuesday's in the initial post is somewhat...off.

So the actual Google Maps mark (the 'A') is somewhat off. Just keep driving and turn right into the parking lot. That's where we'll meet; I'll notify you all of who to look for (my clothing will give me away). Just posting this for the benefit of those who don't know offhand where to park.

I figure, all things considered, we'll end up arriving slightly early (me...I'll probably get there around 6:45 PM). That will give plenty of opportunity to acquaint ourselves before actually entering Ruby Tuesday's at 7:30.

Sound good?

Good job with that map. I am not tech saavy enough to figure out how to do that.

Do you know that Gov. Riley will be at the Pelham Civic Complex tonight at 7pm. I will check the board to see if it is posted there.

I’m afraid he is going to take a beating from the liberals in the state for his stand. He needs support.

I’ll be tutoring students till 10 PM, so I won’t make it.

Here’s what I did for that map:

1) Go to an appropriate Google Map that I want to correct.

2) Hit the PrtSc key (for ‘Print Screen’; it should be on the upper right side of the keyboard).

3) Open up an image editing program (I used MS Paint).

4) Paste the image (Ctrl+V). What this does is that the image on your whole monitor at the time you pressed PrtSc will be pasted into the program.

5) Edit accordingly.

6) Have it hosted on the Internet (I used photobucket, which is free).

Done!

I meant...It’ll be good to SEE you! ;-)

Yeah...just pray for an easy transition for our friend.
She’s still hanging on. Mostly breathless at times.
But still looks as pretty as a picture.
I don’t think she’s ready to leave us! :-)

Go ahead. I can make a different one if you want it to be more geographically-specific.

Hey pappyone. I see you are somewhat new. I’m up here in WV reading about “home” on this thread. I grew up in Huntsville. Get an urge to “go home” for a visit once in awhile, although I don’t knew a soul there any more. Growing older makes one wish to see the places of their childhood. Sigh........

Some news items of interest to Alabama folks:

Alabama exports up 10% in 2008 (NBC13). Will be interesting to the stats next year...

And a more topical bit of news...reactions by Alabama Congressmen to tonight's speech by "The One".

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.
Sessions said the speech was positive and focused on issues the country needs to fix.

On Obama’s healthcare plans: “The current system is not working. We need major reform. But it’s important we don’t make a crucial error and expect the government to run healthcare.”

On cutting the deficit: “He’s talking about financial responsibility, but in the short-run he’s not doing that. … It’s going to be hard to offset this stimulus bill.”

Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Birmingham
On the economic crisis: “We do need policies that will create jobs and help families struggling to make ends meet in these times of economic uncertainty. However, more government spending and borrowing isn’t the answer.”

Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile
On Obama’s housing proposal: “We have to be very careful about asking people who are hard-working, tax-paying Americans who are doing it the right way to absorb even more responsibility to help people get out of a situation that perhaps they shouldn’t have been in to begin with.”

Rep. Bobby Bright, D-Montgomery
On the deficit: “I’m impressed by his desire to reduce our deficit. To do that is aggressive, but that’s music to the ears of people like me.”

On Obama’s leadership: “This man is very capable of leading us out of the economic chaos we’re in now, if given a chance.” But, Bright added, he has no qualms about voting against the president if he disagrees with Obama’s plans.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Anniston
On bipartisanship: "The current state of our economy doesn't leave Congress time to play politics and I look forward to continue working with the President to find common ground on the issues that matter to folks across east Alabama, like jobs, our housing crisis and energy independence.”
