Dr. Sowell is probably going on polls taken after the election that showed that 20% of people who CLAIMED to be conservative, voted for That One.
It could possibly even be true. Who knows, maybe those folks who just couldn't stand McCain and the GOP leadership decided to punish the party, and their desire to purge the party of the RINOS caused them to vote to remove them from power.

TRUEConservative would throw themselves in front of a speeding train rather than vote for a Democrat much less Obama, whereas a "Republican"......yer guess is as good as mine.
With regards to punishing the party, that's a given. Many stayed home and didn't vote with that in mind.

I think the votes that were lacking were the independents, who liked Reagan, Clinton, and G.W.Bush.
