"Not One of Us" (Thomas Sowell on Sarah Palin)
Real ClearPolitics ^ | 2-23-09 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 02/23/2009 9:19:15 PM PST by VinL

If Barack Obama has been the most remarkable phenomenon of the recent political scene, Sarah Palin must be second. The emotional responses to each-- especially by the media and the intelligentsia -- go beyond anything that can be explained by the usual political differences of opinion on issues of the day.

That liberals would be thrilled by another liberal is not surprising. But there are conservative Republicans who voted for Barack Obama, and other conservatives who may not have voted for him, but who are quick to see in various pragmatic moves of his since taking office an indication that he is not an extremist.

Anyone familiar with history knows that Hitler and Stalin were pragmatic. After years of denouncing each other, they signed the Nazi-Soviet pact under which they became allies for a couple of years before going to war against one another.

Pragmatism tells you nothing about extremism.

Sarah Palin was AGAINST the bailout in 2008 that McCain flew to Washington to support. That I know for a FACT. In fact, she was against it so much she never looked at McCain the same way again.

Well that's interesting.

Not like you aren't really invested in this, you know. Given your screen name and everything.

who didn't sell out their principles by backing McCain's support for the first bailout like Palin did.

Then why is Bush in your opinion the greatest President since Washington? LOL.

Glad it was double header for Sowell today. This second one lightened things up a bit.

>> Sowell: But there was something about [Palin] that turned even some conservative intellectuals against her and provoked visceral anger and hatred from liberal intellectuals. ... “She’s not one of us.”

Ha. I’ve met many humble but brilliant people in my life. But, I cannot recall ever the thought: “Hey, that arrogant jackass is a genius”.

Palin is “one of us” - at least in my book.

I want to see more Thomas Sowells and fewer Glen Becks or Hannitys. I want to see more of both. Dr. Sowell does not have the attention of the majority of the public. His appeal while deep is narrow. Hannity and Beck have the ability to speak to several millions through radio and television. While their appeal may not be of the the intellectual depth of Dr. Sowell it is certainly broad and it has far more recognizability.

I say hit them hard with everything we got!

I believe Mr Sowell voted for Obama. Is Mr Sowell a conservative?

Dr. Sowell wrote the following one week before the election in A Perfect Storm:

Some elections are routine, some are important and some are historic. If Senator John McCain wins this election, it will probably go down in history as routine. But if Senator Barack Obama wins, it is more likely to be historic — and catastrophic.

Once the election is over, the glittering generalities of rhetoric and style will mean nothing. Everything will depend on performance in facing huge challenges, domestic and foreign.

Performance is where Barack Obama has nothing to show for his political career, either in Illinois or in Washington.

Policies that he proposes under the banner of "change" are almost all policies that have been tried repeatedly in other countries — and failed repeatedly in other countries.

Dr. Sowell, a wise and patriotic American, did not vote for the Kenyan Clown. He certainly did not endorse this mountebank; Dr. Sowell instead denounced Mr. Obama as incompetent and dangerous.

Compromising with the running mate on top of your ticket is "selling out", but actually being responsible (Bush pushed and signed it) for the bailout is quickly forgiven.

If this isn't utter hypocrisy, I don't know what is.

I was just giving some of the Palin folks here a little poke in the eye.

Yeah... and little else.

I for one the hell cares. If this is about 2012 then this will most likely be a referendum on Barack Obama. Sowell’s point is Palin is the antiObama, the antiIntelligentsia candidate. I’d put her “articulism” and command of conservatism plus populism up against any candidate you can manufactor in your head.

I’ll put Sarah’s ability to pack a house in 2012 up against any candidate you can dream up. I’ll put Sarah’s ability to grow and grasp complex worldviews up against any candidate you could draw up on a piece of paper.

No candidate is perfect in all aspects of their platform, personality and ability. I respect your right to go with another, that’s what primaries are here to settle. So I suggest you put together your dream candidate and have them to meet Sarah at the opening bell in Iowa 2012. I sense Sarah will make quick work of whomever on her way to being America’s first woman president and the first real deal sense Reagan.

But, she didn't. It appears that she struggled mightily with some tier IV colleges.

That's a giant leap to make -- the conclusion that she "struggled." Let me tell you I went to a lot of colleges in a short time and it wasn't because I struggled. It had a lot more to do with restlessness and doubt over whether I was following the right path.

The notion that those who drop out or come and go from college are somehow unable to learn or aren't as smart as others is an elitist attitude. Some people just don't fit in the world of academia, and frankly some of the best conservative leaders I have met fit this description. For the most part I find they are among the smartest and best informed of people I meet.

"Whether Governor Palin runs for national office again is something that only time will tell. But the Republicans need some candidate who is neither one of the country club Republicans nor-- worse yet-- the sort of person who appeals to the intelligentsia. "

There you go. _:)

There you go is right. Another fine piece by Sowell.

I fully expect Bobby Jindal to be anointed by the Washington media and political establishment as the "new star" for the GOP after tonight. Not only will Washington embrace him but I also expect the MSM will give him a pass on his social views and personal life if/until Sarah is out of the picture.

Using the Whittaker Chambers story, Dr. Sowell makes the point beautifully about Washington's world view and way of life needing to be challenged. Personally I think it goes way past that....much of it needs to be torn down if America is to be revitalized.

It will take a special leader to accomplish that. Maybe Dr. Sowell sees some of those special qualities in Sarah that go far beyond what schools she went to or her social background. I know I do.

“my gosh, imagine finding someone YOU LIKE and who Bill Ayers likes”

Bill Ayers is a soft spoken and well mannered. I am sure that if you, or I better talk about myself, if I met him in a social gathering without any idea of who he is, I am sure we'd have a perfectly pleasant conversation on some neutral subjects: football, women, space. Lots of people were deceived by a soft-spoken monsters. Pol Pot was well behaved gentleman while in Paris. I read salivating accounts of meetings with a poet and erudite Andropov (moonlighting in his free time as a longest served KGB head /s).

The current celebrity cult shows that people like to be deceived by good looks or any other shallow reason. But, inevitable, there comes time when the real person plays the role, and when the character matters. Then, beware! If its not too late.

Maybe you should learn why she changed colleges before you draw conclusions. I haven’t seen any evidence of a “struggle,” let alone a “mighty” one.
