WASHINGTON – Democratic congressional leaders and the Obama administration indicated Monday that they will push for greater federal authority to locate electric transmission lines, saying a national power grid stands in the way of developing alternative energy sources.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he will soon introduce legislation that includes giving federal regulators authority to override states on electric grid placement decisions as part of a package of energy proposals the Senate is expected to take up in the coming weeks.

"We cannot let 231 state regulators hold up progress," Reid said, referring to the members of state public utility commissions that decide on transmission locations in the states. He said states should be given every opportunity to participate, but that "there may come a time when the federal government will have to step in," including directing the taking of land for grid corridors.

The feds are going to force the states into rebellion if they don’t knock this attitude off.

This, “We know what’s best for you.” stuff is really offensive.

That’s right. Folks like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi know what’s best for us. We should just eliminate all state governments. Why must the feds listen to 57 sets of conflicting state governments?

These kooks are diverting all our resources for global warming reasons, alternative energy is 1% and Obama plans to triple it to a big 3%!

This is insanity, meanwhile they are blocking oil, coal and nuclear power, while building an entirely new grid for nonsensical sources that barely exist.

Welcome to communism 101.

"They mean Texas."

They could be talking about PA as well. There were plans to run a high tension line through rural W. PA and the people down there went nuts and stopped it.

The lines were headed towards N. VA, ie DC.

There’s apparently not much connection of grids across the Rockies.

When states want to do what the feds want or the feds want to duck an issue: “The states are demanding we act. We are here to help the states. This is a states-right issue. This is a 9th/10th amendment issue.”

When states don’t want to do what the feds want (or even might stop the feds): “We cannot let the states decide for themselves what we can do. We cannot let individual states stop the progress WE want to do. It’s an issue too important for the states to handle themselves.”
