NEW ORLEANS - The federal government is providing six more months of rental assistance to give thousands of families affected by the 2005 hurricanes extra time to reach self-sufficiency or to get into other housing aid programs.
About 31,400 families have continued receiving federal help paying rent as part of a disaster housing program that was set to expire March 1.

Do you really think 4 full years will be enough???
LOL!
Gee, all of my peers in Mississippi who were either wiped out or severely hit by Katrina were back on their feet within a year.
I think they should get seven years, in some cases ten.
Take time.
OH of course he did. These people will be getting free rent for eternity. Everytime they are told that they have to get out or pay up they throw up their hands and whine.
I shouldn't be surprised. This is how the Left rules the country: by creating a permanently-dependent underclass, supported on the backs of the ever-dwindling productive segment.
Everything Obama is doing is aimed at the goal of increasing the size of this permanently dependent underclass. It's a voter retention and recruitment program. Obama is Hugo Chavez.
Oh what the heck - give them 10 years or a lifetime or free money for life for the whole family and all their decendants.
My guess is these people and other like them plus illegals will be getting $100,000 a year in various benefits as Obama destroys the economy. The more he wrecks the economy the more power he will grab.
I do not recall this link, but this able-bodied guy in his late 20's was getting room service, maid service, movies and top end accommodations on the taxpayer dime while he was within walking distance or subway distance of literally millions of available jobs to contribute some to his taxpayer funded lifestyle.
You know, I really don't think 4 years will do it.
I think the lifetime plan is the only way to go.
In fact, I've been doing alot of thinking lately and I think the lifetime plan for aid and assistance shouldn't just be for Katrina victims. I think lifetime aid should be given to anybody who just feels they need it.
This is EXACTLY why Gov. Jindal does not want BO extending the deadline for unemployment benefits in LA in the Porkulus Bill. After the federal funds stop in two years, the state will be on the hook to their professional freeloading class till Jesus returns.
He deserves it. He survived a big storm. Free money for life!
“extra time to reach self-sufficiency “
ROFL.
These pathetic morons were never “self-sufficient” before Katrina and they will never be “self-sufficient” for the rest of their lives.
They don’t want to ever be self sufficient. They always want the govoernment and other tax payers to take care of them.
After all, they gots “rights”. They be “victims”. It’s the “man’s” fault. It’s Bush’s fault.
They can all rot for all I care.
Are you kidding? These people were on the public dole well before Katrina hit.
The Welfare State must love Obama.
What about the 5 hurricanes that hit florida in 04? I know, I was here. Blue tarps everywhere until......2005. People helped each other fix roofs and debris. Many suffered with insurers who did not want to pay out, then double whammy us with huge insurance premium increases. Why can’t NO get it together? Is it because they are black? That is what is being implied by the administration. Black people cannot fix their communities. Or is it Louisiana as a whole? They cannot take care of themselves? Either way, or both, if I were a part of either community, I would be BLASTING the administration for showing us in such a helpless manner. People of NO, pull it together, get it done. There is no excuse for this. I sure don’t hear anything much about Galveston folks not being able to get it done and they were just as wiped out as you only last year. Mississippi folks, gettin it done. Step up. Handle it, stop whining and start WORKING. No more excuses....
This is so wrong on so many levels, I cannot find the words.
Might as well call it Hurricane Welfare.
The war-torn cities of Europe, Japan and Korea were in vastly worse shape than N.O., Katrina notwithstanding.
NOTHING stood or worked when the guns fell silent.
After 4 years they were in MUCH better condition than this AMERICAN city. Don’t tell me about foreign aid, because more money has been thrown at New Orleans than that sent to London, Berlin, Tokyo, or the Korean Peninsula.
Enough is more than enough.
My first thought on seeing the homeowner bailout bill was that many of those receiving funds will be just like some of the Katrina victims: Never taking responsiblity for themselves or their own bills, just getting bailout after bailout, year after year.
Free houses for all!!
