I’m thinking seriously of picking up a couple more guns for home defense. I don’t live in the best neighborhood and should the flag really go up, I want to be able to protect myself and my family.
Do you have any recommendations?

Remington 870 is probably one of the best buys, dollar for dollar.

A) 12 Gauge Home Defense Pump Shotgun. Mossburg is good. I have a Winchester. "Home Defense" Shotguns have a Short barrel so you can use it in a hallway. No chokes required. ([: ^ )
B) A good .40 cal Semi-Automatic Pistol. I like my Glock 27 but for a first firearm, I would go with a Revolver.
You might also want to think about a Concealed Handgun License if it is possible where you live. If not, you may want to move from the "not the best neighborhood" into a neighborhood where you can legally exercise your 2nd amendment rights.

You say you want to pick up "a couple more guns" -- what do you have already? No, don't answer that on a public forum.
Shotguns and .40SW are nice, but if you have those bases covered, I would then move to a AR-15 pattern rifle and/or a 9mm pistol. Why? Well, the rifle obviously gives you options you wouldn't otherwise have, but both the things I suggest also benefit from the fact that ammo will be widely available from a variety of sources, no small consideration when things go badly.
Just my $0.02,

This is an area I have some experience with and enjoy discussing so I would like to add my 2 cents.
For the average(gun novice)homeowner, I would recommend a shotgun for general in home defense purposes. I actually prefer a smaller caliber; 20 gauge or even .410. Most home in home confrontations will occur at night or upon arriving home. At night, under the pressure of the moment it will be hard to see your target and aim, which is why I prefer a low caliber shotgun. Just point and fire. If you use a 12 gauge your gonna have to keep it tight to your shoulder which may be difficult given the circumstances.
