California budget plan would weaken air pollution rules
Los Angeles Times ^ | February 19, 2009 | Margot Roosevelt

California's proposed budget contains a major provision that would weaken air pollution regulations while saving the construction industry millions of dollars.

The measure, largely overlooked in a public debate focused on taxes, would delay requirements for builders to retrofit bulldozers, scrapers and other soot-spewing equipment, slashing by 17% the emissions savings that health advocates had hoped to achieve by 2014.

"There are people who will die because of this delay," said Mary D. Nichols, chairman of the state Air Resources Board.

"It is sad in an era where most people understand that strong environmental standards actually help California's economy as well as public health . . .

"Anti-tax zealots were able to force a weakening of our anti-diesel-pollution standards as the price of a balanced budget."

California's off-road diesel regulations, adopted in 2007, were the first in the nation to require construction companies to retrofit existing heavy equipment.

Hmmm...by their rationale it is better to have healthy unemployed people vs. unhealthy employed people.

Notice how this being "slipped in" is an action of gross negligience and yet these same Dems supported a complete ramming through of the porkulus bill. Hypocrites.

...strong environmental standards actually help California's economy...

Sure. Imposing additional cost burdens on industry always helps our economy thrive here. Taxes are low and jobs are plentiful, all because of the excellent financial stewardship we have in Sacramento.

Ha, ha, ha. Stop ... you're killing me. Really, stop it.

There are 10,000 state funded abortions a month in California. Where is the complaining about this? What about these deaths?

“There are people who will die because of this delay,” said Mary D. Nichols, chairman of the state Air Resources Board.

But as riots ensue because of no wealth or jobs (crime, poverty, hunger) will that count?

The irony is that if the environmentalists and "progressives" have their way and are allowed to kill the oil, gas, coal and nuclear industries, California will look like LA in Blade Runner, or like any large city in China does today. Fuel shortages will lead to poor people poaching trees from forests. The resulting wood smoke and soot will cause countless deaths from asthma and other respiratory problems. The deforestation will cause mudslides and soil erosion, which will further pollute the rivers and air. But being a liberal means never having to be accountable.

You are literally correct. All the burdens that the state put on the economy create more problems for people at the low end of the economic scale, which causes far more death than the unsubstantiated fantasies of tiny increments of air pollution.

Puleez. 200,000 acres burned in my county last summer causing choking pollution. I didn’t see any big rush to put the fires out. They just want to stop commercial enterprises. No wonder businesses are leaving in droves.

The truly scary part, is that I think these people actually believe the things they say, no matter how irrational it is.

She is some piece of work, in a recent editorial she wrote:

“If we’re going to wring the carbon out of our economy, we will need the coordinated actions of government agencies across all sectors and additional investments for rapid economic recovery under a comprehensive national climate change framework. That will take time to develop, and some careful planning. In the meantime, the EPA can immediately draw upon the experience of states like California and its leadership under Governor Schwarzenegger to use its existing authority under the Clean Air Act and take effective and early action against climate change.”

She hates carbon like we hate cockroaches.
