Vehicle fee increase to further hurt struggling businesses

Taxi and limo companies as well as businesses that offer delivery services will take the biggest hit, owners say.

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Steeper vehicle licensing fees could seriously affect taxicab, limo and delivery service businesses in Orange County that are already struggling to survive in a tough economy, local business owners said.

State lawmakers have raised the fee for licensing vehicles in the state from 0.65 percent of the vehicle's value to 1.15 percent, which for a $40,000 car jacks the cost to $460 from $260.

The move is projected to generate $1.5 billion. Officials said a portion of the fee will be dedicated to local law enforcement.

But local business owners say the fee increase has broken their spirit at a time when survival is a challenge.

Taxicab and limousine operators say they will particularly feel the pinch because they operate fleets of vehicles for which they will have to pay up more in licensing fees.

Last night a guy called in. Said he owned his own business and 8 trucks. An extra $5000 a year to Sacramento and illegal aliens.

no need to wonder they’ll all get back in...

CA is all about identity politics, and the combined immigrant and white elitist vote is in a solid majority.

Raising taxes in the middle of a recession. Brilliant.

I was going to buy a new car this year after being hit by an uninsured driver in September I did have an extra car but it eats gas. I was thinking of buying a smaller gas friendly car but this just ruined it for me. This tax CA is taxing me up the wazoo.....and that big $13 on my paycheck IS NOT GOING TO HELP EVEN TO BUY SOMETHING USEFUL
I hate to feel this way but we are doomed!

Oh!
I read that too fast the first time.....

“[CA] Vehicle Fee Increase To Further Hurt Smuggling Businesses”

And I knew the liberals couldn’t be so desperate for money that they’d consider taxing the illegals!

I wish more people knew what business people like you know. Namely, that any additional tax or regulation on business costs money, and that increases in the cost of doing business gets passed on to the customer in the form of higher prices, for whatever goods or services the business sells.

I talk to so many people who don’t seem to understand this concept. They think businesses make huge profits and just take any new taxes out of their profit, and still make money. That’s another liberal myth, that businesses make huge profits.

I wish people knew what happens with Exxon’s profits too. Exxon had reported profits of $40 billion, I think it was. That’s a huge number, but what doesn’t get reported is that Exxon pays out most of that in dividends to its stockholders, and much of the rest is reinvested in the business.

Ah, yes, California, where taxes are not taxes, but are called "fees."

The personal property tax on cars in Virginia is 4.57 percent.
