Well if you had a basic three year old Apple Macbook, all of that capability is built in, out the door.
Do you run GNU-Linux?
I’ve used Windows Movie Maker running on XP - easy to use (me, a complete novice learned) with features like fades, slow and fast speeds, scene lightening and darkening and more - don’t know what it costs.......
Not asking for much are we? You can get a free trial of one of the best tools, Sony Vegas studio.

This is what I use and you can't get much better without going to the very high end production studio products.
I know I’m asking for a lot. I don’t expect to get it. But I would like to know what is the “mostest for the leastest” in terms of meeting my needs.
As I mentioned, I am running Windows XP.
How does the finished video product look?
Cyberlink Power Producer
I have a PC running XP that I do occasional video production on (making DVD’s of some of the child’s athletic events, or our vacations, with titles, fades, and background music, etc...). I use Pinnacle Studio 9, and that has worked pretty well for me. When I did the research a few years ago, I saw the most kudo’s for that product, and it was less than $80.00 at the time (it might even be cheaper now). The version number may be higher now, so it may no longer be called “Pinnacle Studio 9” - it has been a few years since I checked.
Do you have a digital camcorder or know someone who does? I know mine came with editing software. I don’t know it capabilities because I have yet to use it.
Advanced Video of Virgina Beach ! E-mail me and I’ll give ya the number. It’ll cost ya just a little more than “nothing” though.
Snooter ;o)
I use Adobe Premier Elements to make similar videos. I am using version 3, but I see where you can get version for for under $80 on eBay. Intuitive, simple to learn, and lots of special effects and transitions for a low cost program.
Be careful about buying used Adobe software (8, CS3 or later). Their new licensing program makes it almost impossible to transfer a license to someone else.
You should be able to get PE v.1 really cheap on eBay.
you want it to cost nothing? are you a socialist obama voter?
we kid.
2) Be very careful with anything from Pinnacle. I started out with Studio 8 and it nearly drove me mad. Versions up to 9 were exceptionally unstable. I had decent luck with 9, but it required building a new computer to accomplish that. Take a look at Amazon reviews for Studio 9 and 10. There is much gnashing of teeth reported and they're not lyin'. I've been there.
3) Vegas Pro 8 is a great product that I use and heartily recommend. It is also more costly than what you what you are looking for. Vegas Studio is a subset of Vegas Pro, and the basic version can be had on the cheap. If you're lucky, you might even be able to pick it up next to nothing with a rebate from outpost.com or a similar site.
On what?
You should have a least 4 Gig of RAM and a minimum 250 GB hard drive (my opinion).
Video processing will give your processor a work out as well, so the bigger the better here as well.
Heat builds up quick when processing video so before you start make sure your cooling vents are clean and open your case and give your power supply and CPU cooling fins a good cleaning.
Superbowl ad quality? Costs nothing? That’s a tall order.
