I have never thought Bill Maher was funny as a standup, and the crowds at Catch A Rising Star never thought so either...back in the J.J. Wall/Sandra Bernhard days I saw him rebuffed by non-laughing crowds on a number of occasions. Once he swore at the audience and walked offstage like a brat. There was nothing else he could do, I guess.
He wasn't too hip for the room. He just stank up the place.

I always thought the bits about his Jewish/Catholic heritage were hilarious... entering the confessional; “Forgive me Father for I have sinned. I believe you know my lawyer, Mr. Wineblat.” Love it. That was very early in his stand-up “career”, though.
