Mayor Daley has argued that security and terrorism won’t be an issue if his Olympic dreams come true because, by 2016, there will be a surveillance camera on every street corner in Chicago.

But even before that blanket coverage begins, the "Big Brother" network is being put to better use. Call takers and dispatchers now see real-time video if there is a surveillance cameras within 150 feet of a 911 call, thanks to a $6 million upgrade to the city’s “computer-aided dispatch” system.

When live video appears, call takers can pan, tilt and zoom those cameras to get the best possible view of a crime or disaster scene.

Those who give up a little liberty for a little security, deserve neither, and will lose both.

First we want cameras with microphones in the Oval Office and most other gov’t offices.

House to house searches would help fight crime. It is still not a good thing.

Eliminating cars would drastically reduce the death rate on our highways. It is still not a good thing.

People need to think about what they are giving up to get perceived value. There is always a cost associated. The cost must be fully analyzed and then compared to the reward.

Once again, we’re presented with that brave new world, the U.S.S.A.

Honest folks, those cameras are just for traffic control, to save lives. We’ll never use them for anything else.

Hmmm, I wonder why I originally slammed public cameras.

I’m assuming the first cameras will be placed on every corner of Hyde Park.

Chicago already bans gun ownership and that hasn’t taken a dent out of the crime in that city, this won’t either. Of course, it will increase the government’s ability to issue tickets to speeders and people who throw trash on the ground, so it’s a win for the government and the expansion of government powers.

There’s no bottom to the well of government power.

They’re not remotely interested in “fighting crime.” They want to keep an eye on any of us who oppose the socialist regime.
