[South Texas:]Sheriff closes Gateway International bridge after report of shootout in Matamoros

Security beefed up at other bridges

An afternoon gun-battle in Matamoros led to the temporary shutdown of the Gateway International Bridge.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio closed the southbound traffic lanes at the Gateway International Bridge and reinforced security at the other two international bridges linking Brownsville to Matamoros.

Lucio said his decision to close the bridge stemmed from a reported gun-battle that took place at 3 p.m. in Matamoros. The bridge was re-opened about 30 minutes later.

"There was a raid by state and federal police who were investigating warehouses in Matamoros near the Soriana by the Veterans International Bridge," Lucio said. "A gunfight ensued and the shots could be heard all the way to Gateway International Bridge."

Upon hearing the information, the sheriff set in motion a plan to protect residents on this side of the border and to prevent the violence in Mexico from spilling over.

Customs and Border Protection spokesman Eddie Perez said the northbound traffic continues as normal with field operations officers checking incoming vehicles.

However, because there was a state of alert, officers were seen wearing Kevlar vests and some were even carrying assault rifles.

For more on this story, read Friday's edition of The Brownsville Herald.

Wouldn’t closing the northbound side of the bridge make more sense?

In other words, they went out for coffee and donuts.

The Texas border county sheriff’s departments and border patrol are woefully undermanned, outgunned and out-equipped tecnologically by the gangs in Mexico which have conducted armed incursions into the U.S. at known river crossings. A coalition of them met with Congressmen last year begging for assistance. Result?

Stimulitis Package:

For equipment and assistance to law enforcement on southern border (TX, NM, AZ and CA): $30,000,000

For Digital to Analog Converter Box Program - $650,000,000

Conclusion: It is more important for the Democrats to enable their media shills spin their propaganda to the living rooms of new voters (illegals and sheep-le), bankrolled at the expense of those who pay their taxes and mortgags, than to protect our southern border.

Southbound side?!? Wouldn’t want to block the bad guys’ escape into the Untied States of Sanctuary.

Big whoop. Killings happen hourly along both sides of the border.

Americans there on business may be trying to get back. Snowbird tourists would be coming back. Lots of reasons to keep the traffic coming back north for the benefit of US citizens.

Believe it or not, there are a great many companies from all over the country that have sales people visiting the border cities on business. I have one friend that used to do it every 6 weeks or so calling on warehouses and other companies in Mexico along the border that use materials handling equipment.

However, word is pretty much out among the snowbirds to stay away from Mexico unless they absolutely have to go.

Dallas morning news ^ | Feb. 7, 2009 | ANGELA KOCHERGA
CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico – As violent crime surges, this border city and international manufacturing center is deploying security forces to create safe commuter routes for U.S. executives and others who work in industrial parks. Ciudad Juárez is home to 380 maquiladoras, factories where Mexican workers assemble products for foreign companies. Most are U.S.-owned or subsidiaries. The factories employ more than 230,000 people. So officials created special commuter routes leading to and from industrial parks to protect workers and managers. “The maquila industry is about 60 percent of the economy. And we know how important it is,” Mayor Jesús Reyes Ferris...
