The link is to Santelli’s “Rant heard ‘round the world”. It seemed appropriate.
You can file an extension, but if you have taxes that are owed, they will still charge you interest and penalties on what you haven’t paid in. The extension is only for FILING, not for PAYING.
Sorry, I'm just overly negative because of the anger I feel over the mortgage bailout. I can't remember when I felt this much anger over "finances" or anything related to bills and money. I seriously want to do something ... just not sure what.
Wheny ou file an extension, you are obligated to send in any amount owed, computed by a good faith estimate---
(I think it has to be within a certain narrow percentage of the final amount owed....
My CPA buddy reminds me that if there are radical differences between the estimated and actual tax due....
Stand by for an audit...
Just FYI...
What would it do?
NOTHING!
You still have to pay your estimated obligation, within 10%, when you file an extension unless you want to pay penalties and interest.
Actually, I get a refund this year so why would I want to do this?
I filed early, saw what my refund was to be, and adjusted my W4’s WAY up to make sure they weren’t getting an interest free loan.
Won’t work — you have to pay what taxes you owe by April 15 even if you don’t file the return until later.

Actually, what would be really cool is if 5m taxpayers showed up at designated post offices for each major metropolitan area and burned envelopes representing your tax return.
There are always news cameras there to show the people filing at the last minute.
Send your taxes early. Show up and make a show of it. Heck, someone could organize it so that each person burns theirs one at a time and as they do it, they hand over a paper with the totals for FICA, Medicare, income taxes, and state income taxes.
Get a running tally going on a grass roots website. The site would be geared toward *warning* the gov’t that these taxpayers are paying now, but intend to revolt soon.
If marketed properly, the numbers would be staggering.
Remember...that’s how they got Capone into the Graybar Hotel!
YES!!!!!!!!
I've been saying this for at least 3 years, but didn't have the guts to post it. We would need AT LEAST 10 million taxpayers, if there are that many left, to commit to doing this and standing strong...together.
Some have suggested that a couple hundred would be singled out and made an example and the rest of the millions would fold like a cheap suits.
Everyone sits around moaning and complaining or asking the government for money. Do they not understand the only money the government has is what they steal from the responsible citizens at the point of a gun or borrow from foreign governments?
STARVE THE BEAST! -- YES WE CAN!
Let’s have 10,000,000 tax protesters show up in all of the state capitols on the same day, just like a massive anti-war march, but larger!
At the rate jobs and businesses are declining it won't be long before we won't need a 'Tea Party' as there will be few people earning enough money to collect taxes from.

I don’t think half-measures are always appropriate. Sometimes your back is at the wall. If you’re not back-to-wall yet, fine, but don’t expect the drooling monster to be impressed by your little tap dance.
The time will come when each man must ask himself, have I had enough? And at that time the choice is either full resistance or surrender. Go down fighting, or go down abjectly.
However, if you choose full resistance when enough others do likewise, it’s possible the govt will go down instead.
We can also shine our ‘torches of liberty’ (a tiki torch in the front yard).
My taxpayers teaparty is to participate in as little taxable activity as possible.
I no longer eat ANY lunches out. I will start bicycling to work in the next month. I am getting the ground ready for our garden.
Etc.
My economic footprint is gonna be as tiny as possible.
